Well Rendered and Highly Creditable.
The entertainment given in the opera hall ,
Saturday evening ; by the literary society ol
the McCook schools , was most excellent in its
character throughout a 'd highly creditable
alike to the scholars participating and to
those teachers and others who were instru
mental m bringing about a result so compli
mentary and satisfactory. The programme ,
as announced , embraced both literary and
musical efforts , and each and every feature
was sustained with uniform excellence. The
recitations evinced thorough memorizing and
an intelligent appreciation of tiie spirit of
the selection given. The vocal music was
well rendered and received merit approbation.
The dialogues were praise-worthy in tone
and production. The gem of the evening was
the juvenile operetta , "Cobwebs. " In this
the costumes , singing , declamation , march
ing , and whatsoever comes under the head of
"acting , " made up a total of perfection quite
rare , when the youth of the dramatis per
sona is taken into account. It was a truly
delightful , beautiful little production , and
the children presented it in very attractive
form indeed. The music by Dorothy's orches
tra , ( and by the way these gentlemen gave
their services gratuitously , ) was splendid and
was an important element in the success of
the entertainment. There are two matters
of regret : First , tiiat the hall was not crowd
ed to its fullest capacity ; and secondly , that
the affair was marred by the inconsiderate
alarm of fire given in the hall , which caused
a momentary panic. Fortunately cool heads
prevented a stampede , and we have nothing
to record more serious than severe frights , in
what might easily have been a frightful af
fair.
An Evening's Enjoyment.
Mr. and Mrs. C. F. Babcock entertained a
large and gay company of young folks , last
Friday evening , at their cosy home , corner
Dodge and Madison , in their customary , clev
er manner. The chief item of pleasure was
progressive euchre playing , which was en
gaged in with unusual enthusiasm until a
late hour. Refreshments of a dainty , appe
tizing character were served in due time ,
which feast of good things received ample
and appreciative attention. The participants
were :
MR. AND MRS. J. E. Keller , J. A. Cordeal ,
F. M. Kimmell , C. G. Potter , T. B. Stutzman ,
Albert McMillen , C. P. Rinker , E. A. Leach. W.

The first prizes made happy Mr. J. A. Cor
deal and Mrs. J. E. Kelley. Mr. and Mrs. E.
• A-Leach succeeded in keeping both the
booby prizes in their family , after a heroic
struggle for supremacy.
Wake Up and Rustle.
Now is the time ot year , says an exchange ,
when every business man should advertise.
The town that enjoys a boom must advertise.
If you want your town to improve you must
improve it. If you want to make your town
lively you must make it. Don't go to sleep ,
but get up and work for it. Talk about your
town and talk favorably , lteceive every
new-comer with welcome. If you have
property improve it. Paint your houses ; cut
down the weeds ; clean up your yards , make
your surroundings pleasant and you will feel
better and your property will be worth more
money in the market. If you are succeeding
reasonably well , advise your eastern friends
to join you. Work for your home interests ,
and above all patronize home industries. The
successful towns in Nebraska have been made
so by the property owners pulling together.
Public improvement is an investment that
pays. There is no time to be lost. Toot your
horn and toot it loud. Wake up and rustle.
TRUE TO NAME.
Those who appreciate the value of nursery
stock , trees and plants true to name and in
perfect condition , should write to Crete nurs
eries , Crete , Nebraska , for their catalogue
and printed matter giving full description of
sucli varieties as they have found best adapt
ed to Central Nebraska , " together with sug
gestions for planting the same. Their nurs
eries are located 20milts S. W. of Lincoln on
the main line of the B. & M. , and in 17 years
they have built up a large business. On large
orders they pay fare both ways of customers
to come and see them and examine their
stock , by deducting travelling expenses from
bill purchased. Every tiling ordeied before
March 25th will be delivered in McCook free
of charge , as the Supt has sold three-fourths
of a car load , with which additional orders
can be packed. No sale yard. Order early.

Subscribers Pay Up.
It is not the habit of the publisher to do
persistent dunning ; but there is a tide in the
affairs of men which taken at the Hood leads
on to glory ; so there is a time in the life of
the publisher when a little cash seems to be
necessary , in addition to glory. An urgent
invitation is extended our delinquent sub
scribers to call at once and settle up. In
other words we must have some money.
