Emjaii \ .V. HAr.KoiiD. limtifiKlnt , ' editor of
H Indlnmipollt ) Journal , is the man Prcsldcnt-
elect Hnnison lms chosen to bo his private
H secretary. The eeloction was mado unsolicited
H and unsuptrrstcri , and intimates strongly tho
H course which Mr. Hiirrlpnn will pursue In
H making hlo oflichtl Upolutnionts. ] Hcwlllfol-
H low tho lead of his own Judgment.
H When tho Louisville Courier-Journal wants
H to be emphatic and lay down tho law itdoublo
H leads. It ca'ls tho lato election "a conspiracy
H to murder the peace of this country. " It is all
H about tho . It "Tho
negro. says : average no-
H gro in the cotton , sugar and rlco belts of tho
H South is no more lit to vote , or capable of tnk-
lug euro of hfRotc , than an orang-outang. "
It howls about "the grinning death'shcad of n
H ! satyr-like Ingalls , and all the looney mcendia-
I ries like Forakcr , outside of hell ! " But when
I tho C.-J. gets clear of its bile it will feel easier.
I It will have to work olT in the usual way.
. AiiiANVTimesDein. ) : There seems to bo no
doubt that the work of readjustment is going
H on in tho Hues of tho prohibition party , and
H that its tendency toward complete amalgamu-
I tion with the republicans on a platform of high
I license and local option. If tho 40,000 prohibi-
H tionlsts of the stuto were to dlsbanc' , tho re-
H publicans would walk away with any demo-
H cratic majority or plurality that has been
H polled In this state slnco the tidal-wave year.
I It is unquestionably tho fact that tho recent
canvass comes very near putting the republi
cans una the prohibitionists into much closer
I nflllintlon with each other , than they have
I been for years.
I Ax Indiana man has Joined Gen. Palmer of
I Illinois in denouncing the G. A. It. Adjutant
I General Kouutz of that state is the man and bo
I is a democrat. Gon. Palmer could not succeed
I i in having tho Grand Army turned into a polit-
* ical machine to further his political aspirations
I - and hence he has severed bis connection with
| the order. The Grand Army leaders of Illinois
I would have laid themselves liable to severe
I censure had they turned the strength of the
I order to Gen. Palmer and agaiuBt Private Joe
Fifcr , Just as able a man. Just us brave a sol-
I dler and himself a member of the G. A. It. In
I the great majority of these casus where the
I charge is that the G. A. It. is a political mn-
H cbiue , the cause of the charge is that some in-
I dividual failed to make it a political machine
I Nine times out of ten personal disappointment
I has caused the bitterness which finds utter-
I ance in these charges and insinuations : the
I othor time out of ton comes Irom ignorance
I and mibundt'i-Manditig.
I Tnn joint com cntion of the cattlo men and
I butchers at St. Louis has broken up in a row.
I The question of state inspection wits the rock
I on which the convention split. The dressed
I beef men , the commission merchants and the
I majority of the cittlo misers unlti-d against
I the Imtclicrs. The convonliou was in some re-
I spools u remarkaiile one. It wa tlietitsttime
I that the dressed beel industij was squatcly
I banded together against the butchers , who do
I manded a rigid htatc inspection of cattle on the
I s > hoof. Tlie butchers ivi > ii > outtiutnbercd and j
I withdrew , whictt praclicallv brought tlie con-1
I forence to an end. The question of state in-
• * " spection of cattle is one which nt essarily
I would be expensive and liable in the end to
I prove unsatisfactory. A national inspection.
I on the other hand , would bo a guarantee of
I good faith , acceptable in the markets at home
I as well as abroad. As both the bee * packers
and the butchers favor a national inspection
I the difficulties now existing in the dressed beef
I industry are likely to be compromifced.
