OJIAHA is "all torn up. " as it were ,
over the death of an infant son of S.
Arnsteln , while undergoing the Jewish
rite of circumcision. The child was
bat eleven days old. The friends of
the stricken parents claim that the flrug
clerk was careless in weighing out the
morphine administered during the op
eration. On the other hand the friends
of the young drug clerk involved assert ,
that the operation alone was sufficient
to cause the childs death. If the mat-

i Senator Hoau is something of an
old Roman himself when he is aroused ,
! Elis contrast between the administration
[ of Grant and Grover Clevelanddrawn in
, his argument against the ratification of
' the Gshery treaty on Tuesday , is a cam-
' paigu note of no uncertain sound. It does
an American good down to the soles of
his boots to listen to an occasional manly
i sentence in honor of the old flag and in
defense of national rights , in these de-
i generate days , when our government is
afraid to assert its dignity in the pres-
1 ence of any nation stronger in navies
and armies than Mexico or Japan.
The freshet in the Monongahela river
has caused a wonderful amount of dam
age and the fear is expressed that many
lives have been lost. Such a flood has
never been known in that valley , the
water of the river rising a foot , and some
times more per hour. The lower lands
are all deeply submerged and person *
living back on the ledge have been
driven to the second stories of their
houses. It is thought the worse is over ,
but the damage already done is estimat
ed at over $1,000,000.
Merchants who stocked up heavily
witli bandana handkerchiefs arc disap
pointed in the investment. There is
very little demand for an article which
in more ways than one is di agrecr bly
suggestive , and besides the majority of
those democrats who ue a handkerchief
are sufficiently sensitive not to flaunt
the forbidding-looking ' 'wiper" in con
trast with the republican emblem , the
stars and stripes. As a campaign talis
man the red bandana is a lamentable
failure.
In the Republic of Mexico President
Diaz has been re elected , practically
without opposition. . The majority of
the legislators chosen are also of his
party. This will increase the responsi
bility of the ruling power , as it will now
be charged with the duty of giving the
people of Mexico a sound and stable
government. It will be fortunate for
the Republic if a policy of this sort can
be adopted and maintained.

ber of delegates to which Red Willow
