The black-list recently published by
the Pennsylvania road has caused a
great deal of comment all over the coun
try. It contains the names of ministers ,
judges , legislators , lawyers and state
officials who have sold or loaned their
passes , but not a single tiewspaper man
is found on the list.
The Wisconsin farmers are feeling
jubilant over the announcement that
George WT . Peck , the bad boy fiend , is
going to run as the democratic candi
date for governor. They have been
patiently waiting for a chance at the
alleged humorist who makes life a bur
den to the railway traveller. What hap
pened to the Bad Boy's parent will not
be a circumstance to the mauling he
will get when he runs for office.
The love and respect of a true man
is all that makes the pain-filled life of a
woman worth living. Wealth may give
her garments of beauty , pleasure may
lead her into the path of delight , the
world may admire her , and fame may
crown her with glory , but unless she has
the anchor of a strong , manly heart that
beats for her alone , the tempestuous
voyage of life is not worth taking , so far
as happiness is concerned. The sacri
fice of self for the good of others and
the consciousness of duty well per
formed alone can sweeten the bitter cup
of life to any woman who has missed
its best joy a man's honest love. El

The pastoral limit in the Methodist
Episcopal church will hereafter be five
instead : of three years. This is a change
which has been agitated for years. The
influences that have been at work to
bring this amendmentaboutcame largely
from ministers and churches that have
had to maintain their charges , in rivalry
with ministers other denominations
whose pastoral terms have been without
limitation or restriction. It may be
safely assumed that the church at large
will cordially indorse the change. This
leaves the maximum term of service five
years , where it has hitherto been three
years , and the presiding bishops may now
as formerly , make changes at the end of
every year , if it is for the best interests
\ of the charge , the conference and the
preacher.
Cornell college has established a
course ( of journalism which is intended
tomake professional newspaper men in
tile same way as schools turn out full-
fledged doctors and lawyers. The ex
periment will be watched carefully by
those colleges which have looked upon
"the idea as impracticable Similar prop
ositions < have been entertained by Har
vard and other American universities ,
but ! have always been set aside. There
is a gulf between the theoretic and the
practical J newspaper man which no
schooling or set rules will satisfy. The
successful journalist is the man who
follows i a native instinct and who works
his ] way in a newspaper from the bottom
up. lie adjusts his theory to practical
affairs and emergencies , a province alto- }
gether subsequent aud foreign to the
work of a school. }
Omaha is one of the progressive cities
of , the boundless west. She has 110 , -
000 I population , nine national banks ,
twenty-five , miles of paved streets$15 , -
000,000 | in bank deposits , SO , 000 chil- ;
dren \ in public schools , sixty-seven
churches , the third" largest hog packing
business ] in America , and the largest
smeltinir S and refining works in America.
The cit } ' has doubled its population in
four j years , its wholesale trade in the
same time , its brick business in two
years , its grocery trade in four year. * , its
hardware trade in two years , its lumber
business in three years , its hat and cap
bu.-iness in three years , its drr goods
business in two years , its boot aud shoe
business in three years , its live stock
trade in one year and its bank deposits
in four years. This is a very good show
ing and dcinonstates that Omaha is one
of the coming cities of the nation. ]
Land in many parts of the West is
so cheap that many farmers have got in
the habit of doing too much , that is , try
ing to cultivate too much land. Don 't j
do it , you can not put in sixty acres of
corn with a pony team and do justice to
the crop or yourself as a farmer. Sixty
acres of corn yielding 25 bushels to the
acre means 1,500 bushels and lots of !
work. Thirty acres , tilled and tended ,
so as to produce 50 bushels , means 1,500
bushels , less work and untold satisfac
tion. I always feel sorry for the farmer
who has a great big field of corn just
coming np of a sickly color beside his
neighbor's which is dark green.rank and
healthy. L am sorry that he has so lit- ,
tie pride that he is willingifc appears , to -
be so completely outdone by his neigh
bor. "Do well what you do , " should be
motto over every barn door in the J
