The Illinois Bureau of Labor has de
cidedthat the best solution of the ion-
tvact-prison labor question lies in the
banishment of all machinery.
The Grand Trunk railway paid Bar-
num § 50,000 in cash and agreed to
draw eighty circus cars over their road
this season in settlement for the killing
of Jumbo. Mr. Barnum in his old age
still has an eye to business.
The Boston Budget says a driver of a
street car recently called out to a green
conductor : "Switch off ! " and instantly
nineteen out of the twent } ' women in the
car put their hands quickly to the back
of their heads. Don't believe it.

These Boston girls are a queer lot
any how. One of them paid a medium
a dollar to materialize her dead lover ,
and when the deceased failed to appear ,
called in the police and had the medium
jugged. No well-regulated lover , even
of the Boston variety , should be expect
ed to come jostling back into this cold
world for such a pitiful stipend as a

There is a movement to educate
women for trades and professions , and
the chief danger is that it may be over
done. It is urged , and not without some
reason , that in preparing the minority
of women for their career in life we may
interfere with the most important busi
ness of the great majority. It is , after
all , a comparatively small number who
will become doctors , lawyers , clerks ,
traders or teachers. The remainder will
be called upon to devote their lives to
the ordinary duties of womanhood.
A solution of the Indian problem
has been definitely arrived at in Ari
zona. It may be epitomized m one
word , "measles. " The noble red men
in the vicinity of Fort Yuma are now
in the undivided enjoyment of a severe
attick of epidemic measles , with a to
tal of GO who have passed to the happy
hunting ground to date. This plan is
noticeably devoid of the usual hair
raising features of the Indian question.
Its adoption should be as general as
possible.

lows in the time schedule on the star
mail route extending from Benkelman
to Ogalalla , Neb. , to take effect May
1st : Leave Benkelman Tuesdays and
Saturdays , at G A. M. ; arrive at Imper
ial by 7 P. M. Leave Imperial Mon
days and Fridays , at 6 A. M. ; arrive at
Benkelman by 7 P. M. Leave Imper
ial Wednesdays , at 4 A. M. ; arrive at
Ogalalla Thursdays by 12:40 : A. M.
Leave Ogalalla Thursdays , at 4 A. M. ;
arrive at Imperial Fridays by 12:40

The finest railroad train in the world ,
it is stated , was that which Friday after
noon flew through Kankakee over the
I. C. track , making its trial trip from
Chicago to Otto and return. The
coaches , five in number , had just been
completed at Pullman. This experiment
adds a degree of elegance to railway
travel hitherto undreamed of. Mr. Jef
frey , of the I. C. road , and a number of
representatives of all the great roads of
the country composed the passenger ? .
At the ends of the coaches the platforms
are completely enclosed by glass. The
five coaches fit together as one contin
uous coach. The train was furnished
with bath , barbering , culinary , dining ,
sleeping , smoking and drawing rooms ,
all fitted up in the most luxurious man
ner. It is the newest departure on the
part of the great Pullman car works.
The trial trip was very satisfactory. The
train was in charge of Engineer Horace
Seavers and Conductor Mogg , and made
the runs between Chicago and Otto
without a stop. Kankakee Times.
The republic of Mexico is approach
ing a political crisis , the throbbings of
which are already being felt there , that
may have a good deal of interest for the
American people. Within a few years
a large amount of American capital has
found investment in Mexico , and in the
secuiity of which greatly depends upon
the orderly and peaceful progress of
political events in that country. In ad
dition to this the international relations
of Mexico and United States , now en
'
tirely friendly , are of importance as af- [
fecting commercial arrangements exist- I
ing or hereafter to be established be
tween the two countries. Radical pol
itical changes might seriousl } ' disturb (
these relations. The present govern
ment of M p.e : 'j , well disposedassum
ing the sincerity of the assurance very
recently given in his annual message to j
congress by President Diaz , toward the I
people and the government of the United I
States. American-interests as related
to Mexico would doubtless be most sure- ,
Jy promoted and conserved if the present
government of that country were kept
in power.
