pany has not called in its passes. It
seems they fail to understand the force
of an inter-state law on local passes.

make up an opinion upon the inter-state
commerce bill as soon as soms fellow
comes along and tells them just what
it means.
A bus that beats similia similibus :
In the old times kissing a pretty girl
was regarded as a cure for the tooth
ache. The Norristown Herald sighs ,
"It is difficult to improve on some of
those old prescriptions. "
A sensational head-liner in a con
temporary writes : "The people set
down on them in thunder tones. " It
makes a fellow flat to have ' ( the people
set down on" him , but to do so "in
thunder tones" is a heavy set.
Buffalo Bill is astonishing our
English uncles and cousins. The Lon
don Daily News tells its readers that
"Buffalo Bill is not a wild Indian , as
many of them have supposed , but the
Hon. W. F. Cody , a member of the
United States Parliament. "
If you want knowledge , you must
toil for it ; if food , you must toil for it ;
and if pleasure , you must toil for it.
Toil is the law. Pleasure comes through
toil , and not by self indulgence and in
dolence. When one gets to love work ,
his life is a happy one. Ruskin.
Recent demonstrations have fully
proved that water is not purified by
freezing , and that ice may contain the
most poisonous of organic matter. That
multitudes of bacteria have been found
in the'ice gathered from the Hudson
River has thoroughly aroused the atten
tion of medical men and scientists in
the East to a consideration of the dan
gers resulting from its use.
Jay Gould has had his grip on St.
Louis for the last three years , and he
probably never will release it. His latest
turn of thumbscrews is the raising of
the tolls across the Mississippi bridge
from 25 to 35 cents on passengers , and
a corresponding rate on vehicles. To
say that St. Louis is mad , does not
fully express it. She is helpless until
congress regulates the bridge tolls.
A Texas newspaper man proposes
"to bust the Texas Legislature wide
open. " He has begun suits for dam
ages against the Sergeant-at-arms of
the House of Representatives and fifty-
eight members of the House who voted
to imprison him for causing the arrest
of the Speaker during the session. His
claims are represented to be $25 for
actual damages , $10,000 for damages
in character and reputation , and $100 , -
000 for punitory damages.
The Maine House of Representa
tives has concurred in the Senate
amendments to the House liquor bill ,
and it has been sent to Governor Bod-
well for his signature. It will go into
effect in its main feature on May 1st.
The bill makes the penalty on first con
viction thirty day's imprisonment and
imposes a fine to be named by the
Court ; prohibits the sale of cider for
tippling purposes , and allows druggists
'to keep all kinds of intoxicating liquors
for the sole purpose of compounding
medicines. It also makes the payment
of a United States tax prima facie evi
dence of the illegal sale of liquors , be
cause a druggist is not required to pay
that tax for using liquors in compound
ing medicines , and imposes a penalty j
on railroad employes for unloading li
quors outside of regular stations. The ;
fee system also receives a blow in the i
change of the Liquor Commissioner 's ]
rewards , which were provided for in '
the shape of a regular salary instead of
by a percentage on the regulay sales , :
as heretofore. There is , apparently , I
no reason why another drink of liquor j
' should be bought or sold in Maine , ex
cept the one that human nature is hu- ]
man nature , but this prohibition dpes.
