A largo acrpac of small grain is being sown
in this neighborhood.
It is reported that a stock of general mer
chandise will be opened up at Box Elder in a
short time.
Miss Luo Chrysler and Miss Ruth Raino of
the Indianola schools , spent their week's va
cation at Box Elder.
Wo understand that Wm. Doyle sold his farm
last week , which lies just above Box Elder on
the Willow. Consideration , $1(5,000. (
R. E. Moore has arrived from Iowa and will
proceed to build a large and handsome resi
dence on his farm. •
The addition to the church is completed and
was dedicated on Sunday , the 21st inst. , by
Rev. P. C. Johnson. The people can now wor-1
ship with much more comfort than thoy form
erly could. .

The people of this vicinity were , last week ,
called to mourn the loss of another promi
i
nent citizen. We refer to tho death of J. B.
Piper. Mr , Piper was a local preacher in tho
M. E. church , aud was respected by all who
knew him , us a man fitilhful in duty , honest
in purpose. Tho community feel deeply their
loss of a worthy citizen , and the church a
faithful worker. The family have the sympa
thy of the entire community. Mr. and Mrs.

J. A. Piper and Mr. and Mrs. R. N. Piper of
Alma , Mr. J. B. Piper of Omaha , Mrs. Dotibs
and her sister. Miss Edith of Beatrice , all ar
rived in time to attend the funeral of their

PLEASANT RIDGE DOINGS.
The last of March is here , and we are per
mitted to be here yet. I
It is too late to sow wheat , so tho farmers in |
these parts say. Oat sowing is the order
of the day now.
We see West Gcrver don't thank anybody
for their old wagon any more he rides in a
brand new one.
We see James Kanouse is having some more
prairie sod turned over he must have a cross
eyed fellow working for him from tho lay of '
the land.

We have heard a number say , why can't wo
have Sunday school in our new school house ?
We say so , too. The harvest is great but the
laborers are few. !

E. Green says he lias White Elephant and ,
Chicago Market seed potatoes for sale , and if I

there is anyone wishing1 anything in that line
to give him a call.
Mr. Brainard and family returned to Ohio ,
last week. They have gone to settle their busi
ness there and make preparations for return
ing to Red Willow county to settle among us.
Rev. Mason preached at tho Pleasant Ridge
school house , Sunday evening , to a largo aud
ience. Bring your seats along with you when
you come to the Ridge , and you won't have to
stand up.
Mr. Outcout , purchaser of the Gerver farm ,
in this district , has moved in his new home.
He don't believe in living down in a hollow
where he can't be seen nor see anything. He
expects to build a residence on the hill in the
near future.
We don't think preaching only every three
weeks , is hardly enough lor tho poor sin-bur-
dened souls in this district. I believe though , ]
that Rev. Hall had an appointment , a week
from Inst Sunday. I presume it was not very
generally known , as there were but a few out.

Our school was out last Friday week , with • '
nothing more unusual to note the day , than j
the passing of a peanut and a stick of candy
to half a dozen scholars that attended faith1

ORDINANCE.
An ordinance providing for tho levying and
collecting or a license tax on occupations
and businesses carried on within the limits
of the city of McCook , Nebraska , and to reg
ulate tho same.
Bo it ordained by tho mayor and council or
the city of McCook :
Sec. 1. That each and every person. Arm ,
association , or othor corporation carrying on
the occupation or business herein mentioned
within the limits of tho city of McCook , shall
pay into tho city treasury annually tho sums
named as hereinafter provided as a special li
cense tax.
Skc. 3. The money paid into the city treas
ury under tho provisions of this ordinance
; shall constitute and be known as tho "Special
' License Tax Fund. "
Skc. 3. Tho. special license tax fund shall
only bo used for paying tho expenses of grad
ing and rcpairingstrects , constructing and re
pairing sidewalks , and lighting the city , and
paying tho policemen. Provided , however ,
that the city council may at any time , by a
majority of the couucilmen elect , authorize
the passage of an ordinance transferring
money from the special license tax fund into
a fund for the building of school houses in the
city of McCook , or into the general fund of
the city ,
i Skc. 4. Under tho provisions of tills ordin
ance and the power vested in tho mayor and
council of tho city of McCook by virtue of tho
laws of the state of Nebraska , there is hereby

Sec. 5. All licenses provided for under tho
provisions of the ordinance shall be issued :
and signed by the mayor and clerk ; they shall i
specify the amount ot money paid , the kind of j
business licensed , and the name of the person
to whom issued , and the length of time for
which same was issued. The city clerk shall
attest all licenses with the city seal , and deliv
er the same to the person applying therefor ,
only on the production of a receipt by the
city treasurer for the proper sum of money
required by this ordinance The person or
persons to whom license is issued shall pro
duce tho same for inspection on demand of
any resident of the city. No license s > hul : be
transferable in any manner whatever.
Sec. 0. AH licenses issued under the pro- _
visions of this ordinance shall commence and t
end with the fiscal year , provided , however ,
that on and after October 1st of each year , li
cense may be issued good to the end of the * ]
fiscal year by payment to the city treasurer i
of half the amount required for an annual li
cense.
Sec. 7. The license tax imposed under the |
provisions of this ordinance shall be puvable j
in cash or in general fund warrants , the city *
clerk shall cancel the same , keeping a record
thereof , and shall return the same to the city
council.
Sec. 8. All persons who are required to r
take out an annual license under the provis
ions of this ordinance , shall apply to the city
clerk for tho same , on or before the first
Tuesday in May of each year , or as soon there
after as they become engaged in busiuess.
Sec. 9. Any person violating any of the
provisions of this ordinance , or transacting
any of the kinds of business herein taxed
without having first obtained license therefor
as herein provided , shall be guilty of a misde
meanor , and on conviction thereof , shall pay
a line of not less than five ( ? 5.00) ) dollars , nor
more than one hundred (5100.00) ( ) dollars , or
majbe imprisoned not more than ten (10)days ( )
and moreover be liable to a civil action for
the amount of such license HJv.
Sec. 10. All licenses heretofore granted for
any kind of business or occupation herein
specified , and not yet expired , shall be and
remain in full force until the time lor which
the same were granted shall have fully ex
pired.
Sec. 11. All ordinances or parts of ordinan
ces in conflict with this ordinance are hereby
repealed.
Sec. 12. This ordinance shall take effect and
jo in force from and after its passage , ap-
roval and publication according to law.
