Policy often says a friendto apease
an enemy.
The man who takes to the glass is
generally taken to the jug.
The chestnut bell is going out of
date , hut the chestnut remains in all of
its worm-eaten glory.
The fastest train in the world is said
to be one between London and Bristol ,
England , which makes the distance(118 (
milein ) 120 minutes.
Thirteen members of the Congress
that has just adjourned were added to
the death roll. There mortality is said
to be without precedent.
' 'There is nothing new under the
sun , ' ' says Solomon , yet the manner in
which some women wear their hair is
certainly a modern conception.
In the county-seat racket up in Fron
tier county , Stockville is holding the
edge on Curtis in fine form. Times up
there are merrily warm , however.
Between the disappointment in se
curing the passage of the coast defense
bill and the anxiety regarding our peach
crop , the average American citizen does
not rest well at night , and gets but lit
tle sleep.
M BUM
In the sweet and hallowed pretty
soon , according to the logic of Sam
Jones , it will be determined whether
or not death ends all. In the meantime
let us not forget that eternal vigilance
is the price of liberty , and the season
approaches ; when the wives need new
spring hats.
The latest craze is a donkey party.
The ' life size figure of a donkey is paint
ed on muslin and hung on the wall.
The ' ladias are taken to this room blind
folded , and one at a time , in each lady's
hand is placed a card'on which is paint
ed i the tail of the donkey. The lady is
requested i to pin the card on the pictur
ed donkey wherever she thinks it would
J
be proper for a donkey to wear a caudal
appendage. After all have had a trial
the | poor animal , with tails pinned all
over ( him , will be exhibited. Elegant
prizes aie given those coming nearest
the > proper position.
Father Taylor , the sailor preacher ,
is \ the author of the following sarcasm ,
equally-applicable now as when deliver
ed at "Cambridge years ago. "Your
poor-houses are full , and your courts
and prisons are filled with victims of
this ] infernal traffic , and your houses are
full of sorrow , and the hearts of your
wives and mothers ; and yet the system
is tolerated. Yes ! and when we ask
j
some men what is to be done about it ,
they , will tell you you can't stop it !
And yet there is Bunker Hill , and you
can't . stop it and up yonder is Lexing
] ton and Concord , where your fathers
fought for the right and bled and died
\
and you look on those monuments and
boast i of the heroism of your fathers ,
and then tell us we must submit to be
taxed ' and tortured by this rum business ,
and we can't stop it. No ! and yet your
fathers your patriotic fathers could
make a cup of tea for his Britanic Ma
jesty out of a whole cargo and you
can ' t cork up a gin jug ! na ! "
The progressive dinner has leaped at
one bound into popular favor in Goth
am. "This new freak of New York
festivities , " says the Mail and Express ,
"imposes on each guest of the mascu
line persuasion the dutof moving at
the end of each course one seat to the
left until he has completed the circuit
of the dinner table , tarrying for a brief
period at the side of each lady of the
party. When he has safel3' compreted
the hazardous voyage and has steered
once more into the haven of refuge
provided by his first love , there he may
rest till the chairs are pushed back and
a final adjournment taljen. A much
more careful choosing of guests to har
monize each with all is sure to be the
result of this last of fashion ' s mandates ,
so a woman who has obeyed it tells me
if the notion of the week is to endure
even for the fortnight , for a single dis
cordant note mars the effect of all. Any
sandwiching in of dull folk or prosy
folk is sure to be revealed in this puss-
in-Jhe-comergame. " , j
