tana indicate that the loss in range cat-

work.

might annually save $3,000,000 in rib
bons , which the men might spend for
cigars. And still women , some wo
men , crave s 'equal rights. "

In view of the recent decision of the
Supreme Court of Washington Terri
tory , to the effect that their law of 1885
granting female suffrage is unconstitu
tional , we anticipate that there will be
a lively season of weeping , wailing and
gnashing of teeth among the long-hair
ed men and short-haired women of the
realm.
The inevitable result of the late hor
rible railroad accidents and holocausts ,
in the east , will be an imperative de
mand , by the traveling public , upon the
railroad companies of the land , for dif
ferent methods of heating passenger
coaches and greater protection against
fire in case of accidents.
A coterie of Cambridge business
men have incorporated a Loan and
Building Association , with a capital
stock of $100,000 , divided into shares
of $100 each , and payable in monthly
installments. The institution com
mences business , March , 1887 , and
continues 25 years. The incorporators
are : Messrs. W. H.Failing , E.R.Bee ,
J. R. Shaub , C. W. Knights , James
John , J. W. Pickle. C. M. Brown , F.
R. Warren and F. M. Rathburn.
The prohibition movement , like John
Brown's spirit , goes marching on. Way
down in the Lone Star state , a prohibi
tion , amendment has passed the lower
house of the legislature by a vote of 80
to 21 ; while the state senate of loyal
Tennessee lias just recently passed a
similar bill by a vote of 31 to 2. The
legislature of Nebraska has ample op
portunity , and the imperatimc duly as
well of immortalizing itself in the same
manner. Well she don 't ?
A new device for heating passenger
cars is being experimented with on the
Pennsylvania railroad , in which the
special object sought is lessening the
danger of fire in case of accident. The
greater portion of the apparatus is
placed underneath the floor in the cen-
ter of the car. It is so securely shut in
that it is difficult , if not impossible for
any of the burning coals to escape. It
is heated by bard coal , which generates
steam. Two steam pipes * extend along
each side of the car a branch extending
under each chair. The hot air is also
utilized , and passes through a register
in the floor of the car. In case of an
accident the burning coals , being on
the outside of the car , could be easily
removed or extinguished.
At a dinner party in Washington the
other day Henri Wattersonthe , fiery ed
itor of the Louisville Courier-Journal ,
was called upon to reply to the toast ,
"The Administration. " He
arose , an
nounced that he was a democrat born
and a democrat bred ; that be always
had and always would defend democrat
ic administration , right or wrong , and
thought it the duty of every true dem
ocrat to do the same. If one could not
say anything in favor of the president ,
out of respect to the party that elected
him , one should say nothing at all.
Then Mr. Watterson , in the most com
ical way , began a pantomine exhibition ;
showing some very graceful gestures
and keeping his lips 'in motion , but
without uttering a sound. After keep
ing this up for about five minutes ,
whilo the guests roared with laughter ,
Mr. 'Watterson concluded with the
word : "Such , gentlemen , is my opin
ion of the president of the United
States.
