write hooks which should never be read ,
and meddle with subjects which vitiate
her whole nature , hucausc she has not
sufilc ent intellect to make : i name for
herself in higher paths , and the alter
natives before her are audacity or ob
scurity. She v/ould rather stand in the
pillory than sit behind a spinning-
wheel. She is not the peculiar product
of this or any other age. She has been
always with us , o"V to-day there are
perhaps more vo . * to egg Ifcr on , and
more weapons ready to her hand. The
great lesson of three hundred years
ago was the responsibility for human
thought. The lesson of to-day is the
responsibility for human action. Wom
an has a treble responsibility respon
sibility to herself , responsibility to her
family , responsibility to the communi
ty at large. There remains a large
class of women in England who , though
not compelled to work for their broad ,
are no longer content to fritter away
their lives. The whirl of society , a few
superficial accomplishments , and a lit
tle idle reading fail to satisfy them.
They also want something to do , and
therefore add to their lives politics ,
study , and numerous schemes for bene-
litting their fellow-creatures. Though
the multiplied associations started for
the last-named purpose are occasional
ly more advantageous to the characters
of their promoters than to the objects
of their beneficence , on the whole the
j good done overbalances the mistakes.
j It would be hard to deprecate the uni
versal epidemic or energy because from
time to time the pot boils over and
scalds a few fitters. It is a truism to
say that where the cultivation of the in
tellect or the improvement of the com
munity lakes the place of home duties
naught but evil can result.
Reformed Convicts.
"You would hardly believe it , but
many of our "boarders' desire to re
main , even after their terms have ex
pired , " said one of the keepers of the
Kin < rs count } ' penitentiary to a Brooklyn
Eagle reporter. "Long-term prisoners
of both sexes in time learn to love their
7x3 feet cells. For instance , in the fe
male department , we have two or three
life prisoners. These have become so
accustomed to the rules aud regulations
of prison life that I hardly think they
v/ould escape if an opportunity * was of
fered them. As you see. they have dec
orated and furnished their cells , anil
have evidently made up their mind that
they have come to stay. And then
there is another class of prisoners who ,
knowing that they would be unable to
earn an honest living outside , prefer to
remain here where tiiey receive good
treatment and enough to cat.
Said a prominent Brooklyn police of
ficial :
"I have long contended that a home
should be provided for ex-convicts ,
where they could go when released and
earn an honest living. Such a home
could be established on the outskirts of
Brooklyn , New York , or any other
large city. The men. and in fact the
women , could be employed in manu
facturing industries , and thus be free
from the blackmail levied by their
fellow-convicts. "
"How blackmail ? " the reporler ask
ed.
"I-will tell you. Convicted felons
desiring to reform often travel many
miles from the scenes of their cr mcs.
They are unable to obtain work unless
they suppress the fact that they have
been in prison. I know many instan
ces in which convicts , having settled in
southwestern city where they were
leading an honest 1 fe , have been track
ed and exposed by fellow convicts.
Such men have been compelled to pay
heavv blackmail , or else bu exposed
and d'sgraced. In case a man , an ex-
convict has been leading a straight life
for five years in a town where he has
made fr ends and new associations it is
rather hard that he should be compell
ed to lose everything simply because at
one time in his ex'stence'he has been
crooked. Men of this stamp who have
been exposed give up all hope and re
turn to their former life. "

"I refrain from bathing from purely

through excessive bathing have added
sixty new cutaneous disaases to the list
of ills that flesh is heir to , and I have

In a Glacier.
A well at Yakutsk. Siberia , has been a
jtancling puzzlo to Kciontists for many
years. It was begun m 1S28 , but given up
it thirty feet liccnuse it was still in frozen
; arth. Then the Russian academy of sci-
jnces continued for some months the work
3f deepening the well , but stopped when it
reached to the * extcnt of oome 3S2 feet
nrhen the ground was still frozen as hard
is a rock. In 1844 the academy bad the
temperature- the excavation carefully
taken nt various depths , and from the
Jata thus obtained the ground was csti-
-nnted to bo frozen to a depth of G12 feet.
As external cold could not freeze the earth
to such a depth , even in Siberia , geologists
30vo concluded that the well has pene
trated a frozen formation of the glacial
period which has never thawed out.

ivas ever made better by owning diamonds.
Moreover , he asks the question definitely ,
'n a way that dares you to say yes. I
laro pay that I know a woman who has
been "made better" by a pair of solitaire
jiumond earrings. Her health was deli-

Evansvlilc ( Ind. ) Journal. December 31.
A Journal reporter visited the Green riv

she wns lying at the wharf , and interviewed
Mr. Lindsey Uayclen. who was one of the
lucky holders of ticket No. J)2.507. which
drew the Third Capital Prize of 520,000 in
the last Drawing of the Louisiana State
Lottery. Mr. Haydcn i a colored gentle
man , and has for some live years been
holding a position as poter on that steam
boat. He was very much elated over his
good fortune.
' 'By occupying a steady position and be
ing economical in my mode of living. I man-
ngi-d to save enough money to build a lit
tle house for my family , which consists of a
wife and one child. My home is in Frank
lin , Ky. About six weeks ago my house was
burned to tlrt ; ground. I carried no insur
ance on either the house or household ef
fects. My family had nowhere to go , but
luckily I "had SCO in my pocket when I
heard"of the fire and their condition. I at
once sent home $58 , with which they were
to buy some clothing , a few household
goods , nnd to rent a building in which to
live. The remaining § 2 I concluded to in
vest in Louisiana State Lottery tickets. I
was down-hearted anil feltalittle rekle s. A
faint hope was entertained that may be I
would bo fortnate enough to draw some
thing , and when the news reached me that
I had drawn § 2,000 , my joy was un
bounded "
Mr. Hayden further stated that he would
continue in his present capacity on the
steamer "Evansville"and thathe intended
to build a nice cottage for his family and
save the rest of the money. The ticket-
was purchased in this city. The Journal
congratulates the lucky man , who is
worthy of his good fortune.
