F. M. AND E. M. KD1MELL , Editors and Publishers. DEATH OF GENERAL LOGAN. Another eminent leader in the conn- cils of the republic has passed away. The announcement of the death of General John A. Logan is a surprise as ad as it is startling. In the prime of life a brilliant career is suddenly closed , on the very threshold of still greater emi- noncy. Among the galaxy of great Soldiers and statesmen whose death the country has mourned during the pastj j decade few have been nearer and dearer | to the hearts of their countrymen , and especially to the Union veterans , than John A. Logan. No man in or out of congress was more entitled to the grat- Itude of the maimed and disabled sur- vivors of the war. Few men who have eerved their country for thirty years in positions of great responsibility and trust , have made a clearer record. As a soldier , John A. Logan won his first luurela during the Mexican war , where to fought gallantly in the volunteer ranks. As a commander in the war of tho rebellion , he ranked among the ablest of our generals. , In the national legislature , as on the tented field , John A. Logan was always at thn front , fighting for what he believed for the best interests of the nation which he hnd helped save and re-unite. Without that culture which wealth and collegiate education afford , Gener al Logan was pre-eminently one of the 8elf-inade men of our times. In all the glory and eminence which fell to his lot he never lost his head. A positive man , with intense likes and dislikes , General Logan was naturally a warm friend or a bitter eneui } ' . Starting out in his early life as a democrat , he was converted to republican principles and free-soil ideas when he found the great mass of his old political associates ar rayed against the union and the Amer ican Sag. The war made him not only a repub lican , but a stalwart among stalwarts. General Grant was his ideal of republi can leadership , and he fought for Grant in 1880 with more zeal than he did for himself in SS4. As ft candidate-'lir P * the second high- cst office within thegift of the nation , General Logan bore himself with a dig nity which commanded the respect of men of all parties. lie took his de feat with that sublime resignation which marks the man of heroic type. A brave , manly man , General Logan was a kind and devoted husband and father , whose conduct in private life has been exemplar } ' . In his death the republican party loses a gallant leader , and tho country loses a patriot , whose memory will Jong be cherished. Oma ha Bee. TIIE Senate bill for the allotment of lands in severally to Indians was pass ed by the House recently , with amend ments recommended by the Committee on Indian Affairs. As "Doc" did not put in an appearance at school , Tuesday A. M. , the murmur ran around the room , "Where is Doc ? " One do mestic ( ? ) pupil replied , "At homo , helping his mamma wash.
