It's a pretty cold day ? Yes. Cold to-day ,

3Iorley Piper came up from the county-
seat , and spent Xmas at home. I
Mr. Kimble , a brother-in-law of J. n. '
Stephens of this place , lately arrived at Box
Elder from Missouri. I
DIED On Sunday , Dec , 19th , Mr. John
Johnson. Mr. Johnson was among the early '
settlers of Red Willow. The funeral was
preached at the home of the deceased , by
Kev. J. B. Piper , after which the remains
were laid in the Box Elder cemetery. I
The entertainment given in the church ,
Saturday evening , was an immense affair ,
especially if you take the number of people
that were there into consideration. More
and larger buildings are called for to accom
modate the large number of settlers that are
coming to this part of the county.
Ilev. Piper met with quite a serious acci
dent on Thursday of last week , which re
sulted in the breaking of his arm near the
shoulder. Tommy Coward also received
some severe scratches about the head , and
had his thumb smashed. The accident was
caused by the horses which they were driv
ing going too near to the perpendicular side
of a canyon , upsetting the wagon with the
above result Dr. Stutzman of McCook was
called , and the patients are doing as well a
could be expected. SELOXX.

A Hundred Famous Authors.
To be exact , one hundred and two famous
authors find place in the fifth volume of the
"Cyclopedia of Universal Literature , " now
issued. The list is headed by Mary Cowden
Clarke of England , livingand closes with Cy
prian Carthage , A. D. 200-258. Between these
.appear the names of not less than thirty-two
American authors ( which shows the great im
portance of the work in this respect ) , includ
ingthe names of S. L. Clemens ( Mark Twain ) ,
Bobert Collyer , J. Fenimore Cooper , Henrj
Clay , Bishop Coxe , P. S. Cozzens ( author of
Sparrowgrass Papers ) , F. M. Crawford anc
Geo. Wm. Curtis. French literature is repre
sented by Cousin and Compte , Chinese by Con
fucius , Italian by Colonna and thus the
whole world is brought under tribute. The
Record of Philadelphia , says : "The plan of
the work is certainly original , and excellent
judgment has been shown both in the choice
of authors and of subjects. " The Christian
Union pronounces it "excellent. " The Argus
and Patriot of Vermont says : "The project
is an admirable one. When completed , the
student and general reader will have a com
plete Cyclopedia of all there is valuable in the
whole range of literature. " The form in
which it is issued is as superior as it is unique ;
the volumes are handy , the type all that can
be desired , and the binding is in the very best
taste. Perhaps the most remarkable feature
about the work is its low cost only 30 cents
for paper , 50 cents for cloth , 60 cents for half
Morocco bound volumes of nearly 500 pages
each , and even from these prices large reduc
tion is made to early purchasers. Relyingup-
on the intrinsic merits of the work the pub-
isher offers a specimen volume in cloth for
25 dents , or in half Morocco 35 cents ( postage
8 cents extra ) , on condition thatwithin three
days after receipt you will remit the remain
der of the price or return the volume. The
work is planned to be completed in fifteen !

catalogue of standard and popular works is

The Poor Growing Richer.
Edward Atkinson is publishing in The Cen
tury his studies of "The Relative Strength
and Weakness or Nations , " from which we
quote : "In the conclusion of this branch of
the study of the facts and figures of this
country , may it not be held that the alternate
periods of activity and depression which have
effected the industries of this country since
the end of the civil war , have been mere fluc
tuations or ebbs and Hows in the great rising
tide of progress , ending in an adjustment to
ever new and better material conditions of
life ? Is it not true that while the rich may
have become relatively no poorer , the poor
have been steadily growing richer , not so
much in tho accumulation of personal wealth
as in the power of commanding the service of
capital in ever-increasing measure at a less
proportionate charge ? " Can it bd denied that
labor as distinguished from capital has been
and is securing to its own use an increasing
share of an increasing product , or its equiva
lent in money ? "
Still on Earth.
If you are in any way interested in the
subject , expeiience of Mr. A. C. McGrew , a
merchant at Manhattan , Iowa , may be of
value to you. Read what he says :
"About a year ago I was very sick with a
severe attack of lung trouble. 1 tried a great
many physicians , and they all told me I had
quick consumption , and I was entirely given
up , so weak I could hardly walk. I travel
ed all through Nebraska and Colorado to
try and get relief , but without effect. Often
times after a severe spell of coughing my
friends would cover me up , expecting every
moment I would breathe my last. I was then
brought back home , and as a last resort ,
"like a drowning man catching at a straw , "
I began using Chamberlain's Cough Remedy
and the result is , I am strong , healthy and
well , attending to my business. Chamber
lain's Cough Remedy I shall recommend as
long as I live , for to that I owe everything. "
