TIIE telegraph announces tiat ] Bos
ton railroad men are strenuously op
posed to the inter-state commerce bill ,
which , it is given out , is likely to be
come a law. Ordinarily this is pretty
good evidence that the people want the
bill passed , and the probabilities are
bright to that result.
COL. BOB INQERSOLL thinks that ,
were it possible for some corporation to
secure a monopoly of the air we
breathe , a large portion of the human
race would be gasping for breath in a
very short time , perforce of delin
quency in air tax. At $1,000 a night ,
Bob could stand it pretty well , how
ever.
THE B. & . M. folks have now fully
decided to put their depot up town , at
a cost of $65,000. They will be at a
heavy expense , but the B. & M. never
waivers at expense when they want to
do the right thing by a town. The B.
& M. is one of the best roads in Amer
ica , and we are glad that they have de
cided to put the depot and track nearer
the business center of the city. Red

A COUNTRY editor in Illinois lately
sued thirty subscribers in arrears for his
paper , lie obtained judgment against
each for the full amount of his claim.
About halt of them then came up and
made oath they had no more property
than the law allowed them as exempt
from execution. IIehud this lot arrest
ed and sent to jail. The new postal
law makes it larceny to take a paper and
not pay for it. He was a plucky editor
and knew his rights. He will be paid
iu the future.
THE TRIBUNE recognizes in the Lin
coln Democrat one of the fairest , man
liest publications in the west , but feels
entirely at a loss to explain its unwar
ranted strictures on Dr. William M.
Knapp , of York , the newly appointed
superintendent of the asylum for in
sane. The doctor's professional ability
is unquestioned. We see nothing in
the practice oi medicine that necessar
ily ostracises the physician from the
pursuit of politics. On the whole the
Democrat's exceptions are not well
taken or just.

EDITOR TKIHUXR : Through your valua
ble paper , I wish to address my many friends
in Eed Willow county. About the first
question would be , "How do you like Ore
gon ? " I think I will like it pretty well ; al
though this , like all other countries , has its
drawbacks. While TOJ have been having
considerable rain and mud , I would have
my friends understand that it is not all rain.
We have had but one rain to amount to
much for almost two weeks , and that came
during one night. The two days preceding
the rain were as beautiful , sunshiny days as
one could wish to see. And now , while I
read from the papers of the blizzards and
snowstorms in Nebraska , I have only to
convince myself that 1 am in the "land of
the beautiful , " by simply going to the door
and looking out , where the daisies , mari
golds and other flowers are in full bloom.
There has been no freezing weather here
yet to speak of nothing more than a few
nights of heavy frosts. I thought" rather
strange when I first came here to see the
churches so well patronized , when you could
go up the streets and see the saloons in ftdl
blast , Sundays not excepted ; but after be
coming better acquainted and learning that
there was a strong democratic element here
and also that the people were largely from
the South , J did not think it so strange.
This , I think , is destined to make one of the
finest valleys on the American continent.
Although it is admitted to be the finest for
wheat , fruits and vegetables , its resources
have never been half developed. There are
no ditches. The people are southern and in
dolent in their ways. Although we have
finest timber and plenty of minerals in the
hills , there are no manufactories here. The
impression that some people would like to
give out that this country is all fern , is a mis
take. There are what they call their fern
lands , only a small per cent , of the land ,
however , but the greater portion of Willam
ette Valley is as fine a country as one need
wishto find. Terhaps , if this does not find
its way to the waste basket , I may come

DIPHTHERIA.
A SCKE CUBE FOR THE TCKJIIBLE DISORDER.

Please publish the following treatment of
diphtheria. It has been used by myself and
others to whom 1 have given it , in over one
thousand cases without a failure. It will al
ways cure if the treatment is commenced be
fore the diphtheria membrane extends into
the air tubes which is known by great diffi
culty of.brcathing and restlessness. In such
cases no remedy yet discovered will always
effect a cure ; but if the patient is watched
and this treatment used in time , there is no
danger. I sent this treatment to a friend of
mine in Wisconsin and he used it on himself
and family and neighbors with such success
that he requested me to send it to you for
publication , as this horrible disease is pre
vailing in parts of Missouri.
PIIMITHEUIA WASH.
Golden Seal , purvcrized , 1 Drachm.
Borax " "
, 1
Black Pepper , " 1
Alum " "
, 1
Nitrate of Potash " 1 "
Salt , " 2
Put all into a common sized teacup or ves
sel which holds about four ounces , and pour
half full of boiling water , stir well , and then
fill full of good vinegar. Fit for use when
it settles. Make a swab by getting a little
stick about the size of a pipe stem , notch one
end , and wrap a strip of cotton cloth around
it , letting the cloth project about half an
inch beyond the end of the stick so as not to
jag the mouth and throat , and fasten with a
thread. Swab the mouth and throat every
half hour if the case is bad ; evcrv hour if
not bad. When tho patient gets better ,
every two hours ; then when better every
four hours ; and when still better , two or
three times a day , till well ; which will be
from two to seven days. Touch every af
fected spot tho uvula , tonsils , and fauces ,
the whole of the back part of the mouth and
top of the throat , and lot the patient swallow
a little of the wash" each time you swab.
Swabbing causes no pain though the patient
sometimes vomits ; but swab well and a , feel
ing of relief will follow every swabbing. Let
every patient have a separate swab and
wash , as the disease is undoubtedly infec
tious. Keep the wash pure by pouring what
you use each time in another vessel , and also
wipe off any matter or slime that may be
on the swab , every time you take it from the
mouth. Hub the following liniment on tho
throat outside once every three or four hours
and keep a fiannel cloth around the neck till
well :
Spirits of Turpentine , - - 1 Ounce.
Sweet Oil ( or Linseed oil ) 1 Ounce.
Aqua Ammonia ( mix ) - 1 Ounce.
Shake before using each time. Keep the
bowels regular with castor oil. Keep the
patient in the house , but ventilated well.
The diphtheria wash and liniment will be
found sufficient for all cases if taken In
time ; and should you mistake any other
sore throat for diphtheria , you will effect a
cure almost invariably , as 1 use this for all
common sore throats. 1 have never lost a
case , and many have told me that'no money
would induce them in these diphtheria times
to be without the wash and liniment , and
when a soreness in the throat is felt , it is
used and a cure always effected.

Chicago.
Weather continues fine , snow gone , roads
dry and solid , and many farmers plowing and
everybody happy.
Miss Nettie East has riiade final proof on
her claim. We presume some old bach , will
be pleased to cultivate her acquaintance now.
M. F. Horrell has sunk a new well , pur
chused a new wind-mill , has the tower paint
ed , built a stable and shed , and settled down
to business generally.
A. Modie has completed a very comfortable
and commodious stable , it being 14x28 feet in
size and strongly built. It is a joy to our heart
to see such substantial evidences of prosperity
among us.
Miss Ilettie Mooie , a graduate of Franklin
Academy , is instructing the youth in school
district No. 5S , in this town. We extend her
a cordial welcome and trust that her stay
among us may be both pleasant and profitable.
It is passing strange what a few industrious
old hens can do. Mrs. W. Coleman's have
been trying to lay a barrel of eggs , and the
only reason they did not succeed was the
barrel was too large. However , Mrs. Cole-
man took CO dozen to town on Tuesday , tor
which she realized the sum of $15.87. That
is equal to three loads of corn of 23 bushels
each at 23 cents per bushel.

History of the Knights Templar.
The arrapnlc story of the origin , rise , and
growth , and the decline and fall , of this fa
mous military and religious order has hardly
its parallel in all history. Of modern histor
ians , the author of this sketch , James Antho
ny Froudo is , probably better than any
other , qualified to tell It in a manner worthy
of tho theme.
This celebrated order was established In
1117 , for the purpose of keeping open , for pil
grims , the road between tho seaport of Aero
and Jerusalem. It consisted originally of
nino French knights of noble birth , who as
sumed tho appejlation of "Tho Poor Brothers
in Christ ; " they took upon themselves vows
of poverty nnd of chastity , and of unqueS'
tioningobedience to the Patriarch of Jorusti-
loin aud to tho Knight whom they should
choose as their Grand Master. The Order
soon grew into tho most important one in
Christendom , having immense possessions iu
nearly every kingdom in Europe , even after
their final expulsion from Palestine by the
Saracens in 1280. The story of tho Jealousy
which sprungup against the Order among tho
European sovereigns tho Pope included is
told , in sufficient detail. Perhaps the most in
teresting chapters are those which tell of the
arrest and trial of the French Templars ia
1307 ; their condemnation , and tho burning at
the stake in 1314. of Jacques de Morlay , their
last Grand Master.
The historical sketch above referred to has
recently been published in a series of articles
in The Library Magazine , and is now issued in
a very neat cloth-bound volume at tho price
