LAST Tuesday , the election returns
from all over the country indicate. was
a "chilly day" for free traders.
IT was not tiiat $29,000 worth of
flowers for the White House that Cleve
land objected to. It was the $14,000
for soldiers' pensions he vetoed , with
such an economic fdeling of righteous
indignation.
ONCE upon a time , a donkey fell in
to a hole , and after nearly starving ?
caught sight of a passing fox , and im
plored the stranger to help him out.
"I am two small to aid you , said the
fox , but ] will give you some good ad
vice. Only a few rods away is a big
elephant. Call to him and he will get
you out in a .jiffy. " After the * fox had
gone , the donkey reasoned : "I am
very weak for want of nourishment.
. * 'JBvely7inoye
loss o'f-strength. If I raise niy voice
to call the elephant , 1 will be weaker
yet. No , I will not waste my substance
that way. It is the duty of the ele
phant to come without calling. " So
the donkey settled himself back and
eventually starved to death. Long af
terward the fox when passing the hole
saw a whitened skeleton and remarked :
"If it be that the souls of animals are
transmigrated into men , that donkey
will become one of those merchants
who can never afford to advertise.
DEARLY beloved brethren , republi
cans , hear this doleful , dolorous dem
ocratic wail from Calhoun of the Lin
coln Democrat :
The republicans have undoubtedly made
large gains in the house of representatives ,
which is of itself not to be regretted. The
democratic mind has dwelt too long and too
lovingly on the spoils for the past two years
and the party has existed without any spec
ial object in view. It lias done little to at
tract the approval of the country , if we may
except the fact that the clerical functions of
administration have been discharged with
more skill than could have been ordinarily
expected of green hands. The country likes
to see a party harmonious upon well under
stood and pertinent public questions. The
most important issue of the day is the tariff ,
and the public expected the democratic par
ty would make at least one experimental
move in the way of reduction. This has not
been done , and the party .suiters a deserved ,
loss in congressmen. This is still further
heightencd"if present appearances maybe
depended upon , by a Joss occurring from an
entirely different cause. Leading democrats
who had become offensive to those rich and
powerful manufacturers who enjoy millions
of unfairly gotten gains are reported to have
been slaughtered by the unscrupulous and
almost unlimited use of money. Thus the
party , by its passivity , is burning its candle
at both ends , and in two years , unless a rad
ical change is made , it will be ingloriously
beaten in the country at large. Unless the
democratic party raises , defines and meets
the issue of tariff reform , making the great
northwest its chosen battle ground , it will go
under in 1SSS.
Worse Than a Fire Alarm ,
o
One of the most dreadful alarms that
can be sounded in a mother's ear is
produced by croup ; dreadful , because
it is known to be dangerous ; the more
dreadful because the life of a loved one
is in jeopardy. Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy is a never failing safeguard
against this dangerous disease. Its
reputation as a preventive and cure
of croup is fully and firmly established.
In fact , it is the only remedy which
can always be relied upon. Sold by
