AFTER a careful and prayerful con
sideration of the matter , we are con
strained to the judgment that the only
adequate punishment that can be in
flicted upon our erring brother of the
Courier is to be kicked to death by a
mule. The only objection to this mode is
sympathy for the long-pared quadruped.
THE independent republicans of the
56th representative district have select
ed Col. S. H. Henderson , of Frontier
count } * , as their standard bearer. The
Colonel is represented as a gentleman
of marked ability and general excel
lence of pnitp , and it is conceded that
he will make a strong run in the coun
ties of Frontier and Gosper , as well as
in western Hitchcock county.
THE leading issue of the bourbons in
this campaign in Nebraska is the beer
barrel. One cannot but admire the as
surance of a party that dares make a
bid for the suffrages of honest , intelli
gent men on such an issue. The de
mocracy is , however , specially and pe
culiarly constituted for the effort.
There is doubtless some inscrutable ,
providential purpose in the existence
of the party. Probably a solemn
warning for the coming generations.
IT pains us to observe the brilliant
young paragrapher who presides over
the "Topics of the Times" on the Lin
coln Journal since Calhoun's abdica
tion , go into such a foolish delirium
over a truistie chestnut given utter
ance in our last issue but one , relative
to the blue-stocking Presbyterianism
which prevails in the Journal's general
policy. While on the other hand it
affords us a little pleasure to give him
some pabulum to digest , notwithstand
ing he performs the latter operation in
unreasonable and dis
a most illogical ,
courteous manner , hardly to be expect
ed from "the leading paper of the
state. "
