j "TilE colored men of this city are

democratic politician , recently ; "Well , "
[ responded his opponent , "you'1'need
i them , for your party requires a thun-
j dering lot of whitewash. "
"TilE shah of Persia , " says the Lon-
! don Truth , ' 'appears to be a model
fatherly sovereign. The ladies of Te
heran recently sent a deputation to him
to complain of the cafes , which are
springing up there on all sides. They
set forth that their husbands spent too
much of their time there , and that the
consequence was 'a decrease in , the de
velopment of family life , and a blow to
the happiness of the domestic hearth. '
The nest day his Persian majesty or
dered all the cafes in the kingdom to
be closed. "

"LET me tell you a good little story
about a young man down our way , " j
said an Oxford gentleman the other'
day. "The hero of our story is a well
known citizen of Minden. He was
married not long ago and started on a
western wedding trip. When the train
stopped at Oxford for dinner a waiter
rushed out and began pounding a gong.
The young man from Minden , thinking
it was intended for a chirivari , rushed
up to him and exclaimed : 'Hold on ,
there ! How did you fellows down here
get onto this racket ? Stop her ! I'll
set 'em up for the boys. ' "
"Mr dear , " said a young Chicago
wife to her husband aftei\they had re
turned from their wedding tour and
settled down to housekeeping , "in
looking over this box of goods , I find
your father's old family Bible and here
is an entry under the head of births ,
which says : 'Albert , W. , born May
3. 1840. ' Didn't you tell me you
were 37 years old ? " "Ah , " replied
Albert pleasingly , "that's a copy of
the old version. It's full of mistakes.
In my office down town ] have a Bible
of the new revision. I'll bring it home
this evening. "
A SAD accident recently happened in
a church in Liverpool. The pews of
the church had been varnished the
week previous and were not yet entire
ly dry. The congregation did not know
this. ' The clergyman came out of the
vestry room and began the service by
reading the sentence : "Bend your
hearts and not your garments , " etc. ,
the congregation rising as he began.
But , to the horror of everyone , they
foundthemselves stuck fapt to the
seats ; ' and , though they had just been
told not to dtr so , many of them literal
ly rent their garments in their efforts
to get up.
