t ANNOUNCEMENT.
In accordance with the wishes of my friends
as well as of the leading business men of Mc
Cook , and also many of the delegates who op
posed me in the Republican Convention , and
who have since reconsidered the matter , I do
hereby announce myself as an Independent
I
candidate for the office of Commissioner , in
and for the Second Commissioner District in
Bed Willow county. J. P. SQUIRE.
u
POLITICIANS , ( and we desire to be
understood as using the term in its
highest sense , ) are just as essential , in
their line , as the doctor , the lawyer ,
the preacher , or the journalist , in their
respective activities.
THE indications seem to be that the
Republicans of Frontier and Gosper
counties will place a candidate in the
field for representative who will do W.
W. up in Brown style. Even so. And
the brethren can't do better than to
place Bro. Powers , of the Stockville
Faber , in the field. For in him will
they find straight goods.
THE 30th Senatorial Convention
which met at the Opera Hall in this
city , this afternoon , was the closest
and most hotly contested political
struggle that has ever transpired in the
district. We stop the. press at this late
hour to inform our readers that the
choice of the convention is J. P. Lind
say , of Beaver City , F.urnas county.
The first ballot stood , Lindsay , 19 ; Do
lan , 11.
LANCASTER county recently voted
$70,000 bonds to secure the Missouri
Pacific railroad , in the fond hope ol
reducing freight rates , etc. They now
have the road , but find that they have
been scheduled higher than Omaha ,
and that their last condition is worse
than the first. To remark that the
average Lincolnite is "madder than a
wet hen , " is putting it mildly.
THE democrats in convention assem
bled , last Saturday , wisely concluded
not to nominate a candidate for county
attorney. Colonel Snavely's recogniz
ed popularity and strength among the
voters of Red Willow county , gives
him a complete walk-away. The dem
ocrats evidently felt their utter inabili
ty to defeat him , and thus saved them
selves the humiliation of complete de
feat.
AFTER all , it really is not a uiattei
of so much moment to the people of
this commonwealth , who is elected
United States Senator , as what freight
rates they pay. It is a thing of some
importance to the average citizen to be
able to buy an additional pound of su
gar for a dollar , or a iittle more coffee
or get a better grade than he has been
using. Never niiud about the quarrels
of the politicians. Let us look after
the bread and butter feature of life at
all proper times and places. This
seems to be one of them.
THE race for governor will not be a
walk-away for any candidate. With
Henry T. Clarke and John M. Thayer
as the most prominent candidates ,
there are a number of minor aspirants
who will have following enough to hold
the balance of power. Hon. Leander
Gerrard , of Platte county , will muster
the delegation from his own and the
surrounding counties. Hon. J. B.
Dinsuiore , of Clay county , has consid
erable follo'wing in the southwest. Hon.
Jack McCall , who is very popular with
the boys of the western part of the
state , has just entered the race track
with a very enthusiastic crowd of sup
porters. Then there are several candi
dates who will take second place , if
they cannot get the first. The heir
apparent of Jim Paul , whose first name
is E. K. Valentine , has been laying
low to catch the weasels asleep in ex
pectancy of turning up on the home
stretch as the dark horse. The gover
norship will not go begging this year
although the salary is only $2,500 and
no perquisites. Omaha 'Bee.
PROMINENT and aggressive among
the issues of the day , stands prohibi
tion. Probably none of the questions ,
political or moral , now agitating the
public mind , come nearer the heart and
innermost consciousness of the people ,
than does this phase of the temperance
movement. Possible it is , also , that
upon no other measure do good people ,
( and we use this term in the conven
tional sense , ) differ more widely as to
the means to be employed. The ob
jectionme thinks , to prohibition , by
these people , is largely based upon the
alleged failure of enforcement ; while
the curtailment of "
consequent "suppo
sitions personal liverty , " is likewise
urged against the law , although noth
ing better is ever suggested by these
objectors. But , we desire to call at
tention to fact that
a anti-prohibition
ists seem for the occasion to lose sight
of , namely , the imperfection of all le
gal or moral machinery. The discrim
inations of men are never infallable ,
nor are their statutes. JS"o matter
how cautiously laws may be framed ,
the privileges of the few must be sub
servient to the best interests of hu
manity. It is at best but an approxi
mation to perfect justice that we can
hope for ; this is , especially true of
laws regulating public taste or appe
tite. The criterior by which the move
ment must be tested , is : What methods
will accomplish the most good , and do
the least harm ? Some harm will be
done , and much good left undone ,
though the wisest plans be adopted ;
so that those measures must be appro
priated and enforced , which on the
whole , will secure the greatest good to
the greatest number. So far no plans ,
we believe , have been devised better
than prohibition. If its opponents
have anything better to propose , give
it to world instanter. They are look
ing for it. All agree as to the desira
bility of temperance , and temperance
people want to use the best possible
means to reach that consummation.
THE democrats should advertise for
sealed proposals for harmony. The
stock is low , and declined rapidly , Sat
urday.

THE democrats of Red Willow coun
ty held their convention in this city
last Saturday afternoon , transacting
the business as laid down in the call
J. A. Cordeal , Esq. , presided over the
deliberations , which were duly notec
by J. H. Vaughn , Esq. , secretary. Af
ter quite a close contest between Thos.
Golfer , Esq. , of this city , and S. W.
Stilgebouer , of Danbury , the former
received the nomination for representa
tive. The convention passed a resolu
tion recommending the democrats o !
the county to vote for J. P. Squire , o :
Driftwood , independent candidate for
commissioner for the second district.
No candidate for county attorney was
placed in nomination. The present or
ganization was continued for 1S87.
IN his speech accepting the nomina
tion , Mr. Lindsay , created quite a fav
orable impression in the convention , he
being almost unknown to the majority
of the delegates , notwithstanding.
THAT was a very neat speech by At
torney Grubb , of Indianola , in placing
Senator Dolan in nomination. With
a fitting second by Attorney Stewart ,
of Curtis.

What scares the spoilsmen is the large
number of preachers who are lighting the
battle of prohibition. Where the prophets
lead , a multitude often follow. Philadel

The Prohibitionists opened their conven
tion at Harrisburg , Pa. , the other day , by
singing , "Jesus , Lover of My Soul , " and
other stirring hymns. That's very much up-
like the way the politicians opened their
conventions ; and it reminds us much of
Cromwell's "lighting psalm-singers. " They
appear to be in dead earnest , and there'll be
any amount of fun in the political arena
'twixt now and the ides of November. Toc

A CORRECTION.
Eu. TRIBUXE : I notice in your issue of
last week , the failure of J. W. Pickle & Co.
of the Red Willow and Cambridge grist
mills. It was a surprise to me. I went
down to the basement and up stairs , but was
no indications of failure unless we had neg
lected to toll the last grist. By going to
Cambridge I found the mill doing first-class
work there. The busy body who started
that false report will do well to mind his
own business hereafter. To the fanners , I
say , bring on your grists. We are grinding
every day , and your grists will be tolled as
heretofore. J. RAXDEL.
