THE Republican Senatorial conven
tion meets in this city , Thursday of
nest week , September 9th.
OUR ambitious young friend Ashwill
of the Stratton Herald , in a recent issue ,
assayed to climb up unto the stalwart
forms of Supt. Campbell , Representa
tive Hocknell and other prominent citi
zens of our city , armed with the rod of
castigation. While we are forced into
a species of admiration for the young
journalist's sand , we conceive that there
is an evident lack of the twin quality
sense.
TELEGRAPHIC reports bring us the
news of a severe earthquake all over
eastern part of the country. Cliafles-
ton , S. C. . the information at hand goes ,
is leveled by the earth's convulsions ,
many being killed and injured. Com
munications with the city are entirely
cut off.
MONTE CARLO has had a very suc
cessful season with her gambling hells ,
this year. Seventy-sis persons have
committed suicide since spring opened.
They always give a man who has drop
ped his pile , a railroad ticket to go
away with , so that he can kill himself
in a pleasanter spot , and all but the
seventy-six used the tickets. They
wouldn't waste any time in travel.
THE incredulity of Secretary Bayard
regarding the reported disgraceful con
duct of Envoy Sedgwick in the City of
Mexico , will be removed by the dis
patch of the American consul , stating
that Sedgwick was found helplessly
drunk in a disreputable house. The
sense of humiliation of the American
representatives and citizens in Mexico
will be shared by all their countrymen.
THE Democrat swings out its last
fall tune of towu against town , in the
hope that it may create another disaf
fection in the republican ranks as it did
then. Republicans beware of the vi
per the snake in the grass the rene
gade republican who is a democrat for
revenue this is the season of the year
when it must earn its salary , and it
does it by appealing to the lowest hu
man passions to accomplish its wicked
purpose. Indianola Courier.
THE seven anarchists in jail will not
feel that they have been singled out for
lonesome martyrdom. Detectives are
after the rest of the murderous gang ,
and-some have been arrested. Others
are spotted. This is right. Liberty
does not belong to them. They would
destroy it , and for the safety of the
people they must be restrained. There
is a woman by the name of Parsons who
should not be overlooked. Gallantry is
out of place on the part of a detective.
THAT Hon. James Laird will re
ceive the nomination for Congress , this
fall , by acclamation , seems to be the
case beyond a peradventure. His pop
ular course during the last session of
congress , has added greatly to his sup
port in the district , and more especial
ly in the western part of the same.
Some of his most pronounced and ac
tive enemies during the last campaign
are now his most ardent supporters.
His evinced interest in the homesteader ,
as against Commissioner Sparks' un
reasonable and outrageous and unlaw
ful rulings , has placed them in the
front rank of his supporters , while the
general sentiment of his constituents ,
whose welfare has been uppermost in
the Congressman's activities , is : "Well
done , good and faithful servant. ' " '
NORTH DIVIDE DOTS.

A few drops of rain on Friday.
it is said that there is to be a wedding hi
this neck of the woods before long.
Broom com harvesting has commenced ,
with the prospect of a very line crop.
Will Hanlein is laid up with a bad case of
oak poison. Xo wonder the base ball club
were beaten.
Haying is progressing finely , although the
canyons do not yield as well as usual , still
the hay is of better quality.
Quite a number of North Divideites attend
ed the picnic given by the Ox Orient base
ball club of Box Elder , on last Saturday. A
pleasant time is reported by all.
Walter Hickliug and sister , Mrs. Wm. T.
Johnson , returned from Kansas on Sunday
last , where they have been visiting their
parents and looking after Walter's claim.
Ike Johnson and Charley Poyser returned
from the east , a few days ago. They found
work as scarce as it was at home. Of
course Miss H. and Becky are happy again.
Capt. A. T. King is the champion melon
raiser of these parts. Ye local helped to eat
a watermelon at his place on Sunday last ,
that weighed 37 pounds , and measured 4 feet
5 inches in circumference. How is that for
the great desert. JASOK.

The marriage was a quiet one , only a few
of the most ultimate friends being present.
The young people were the recipients of a
number of handsome and useful presents at
the hands of relatives and friends.

We were pleased to see Mr. and Mrs. Har
ris at Sunday school and preaching last Sab
bath. Hope they will come often.
Mrs. Adams missed Sunday school , last
Sabbath , on account of sickness. She is
among the most faithful in attendance.
Miss Pinuey spent Sunday on her home
stead. Siie is to have a new house built , next
week. It will be somewhat imbedded in the
earth.
The weather continues hot , with an occas
ional shower ; enough to keep things grow
ing and the poor homesteader from losing
courage.
Miss Bertha E. Lincoln is expected to ar
rive in the neighborhood , soon , and will
teach the "young idea" at Yailton , the com
ing six months.
We were truly sorry to part from our
friend and minister , Rev. Spangler , who will
go next week to Ohio , where he will finish
his course of study. We predict for him a
bright future.
; Some one ought to see after Charley Pate ;
1 we fear he has gone astray. His amiable
countenance has not been visible at Sunday
school for several weeks past.
While making some repair on the sand
point of his pump , C. H. Pate had the mis
fortune to drop 65 feet of the pipe into the
well , which could not be got out. He has
since put in a new pump , we understand.

SOUTH SIDE LOCALS.
Now is the tune for a man to invest in real
estate on the South Side.
Joe Mundal has returned from Curtis , this
time to stay. He reports work on the rail
road finished there for the present.
Tim Hanau is bi caking bronchos. He is
rather lightweight for the business , but
seems to be putting in good work.
It is reported that there is a coal mine in
this vicinity. From the specimens we should
say reports are pretty correct. Bully for
the coal mine. Uxo.
