HON. J. W. DOLAN.
The press generally throughout this sena
torial district have expressed their preference
for Hon. James W.Dolan. of Red Willow coun
ty , for State Senator. The Pioneer has not
heretofore expressed a preference for any
one neither has it any pet candidates for any
of the offices to be voted for this fall. It has
been the province of the Pioneer to build up
Dundy county and its people ; and as our peo
ple are mostly new settlers , we feel it our duty
to express our opinion in regard to who is fit
to serve them in both branches of our state
legislature , as well as state and county offices.
The gentleman whose name appears at the
head of this article is a resident of Red Willow
county , long a resident of the state , and one
whose interests have been'identified with not
only his own countybut with western Neb
raska generally. He has already served the
people of this district two terms in the state
senate at Lincoln. His popularity for honesty
and for hard labor in behalf of his constitu
ents has been favorably spoken of throughout
the state. No charge of his being bribed by
any monicd corporation has ever been intima
ted , and no fault has ever been found by his
constituents against his efforts to maintain
their interests. We have no intimate person
al acquaintance with Mr. Dolan. but have
known him from reputation for the past five
years , and our position has been such during
that time that if anything against either his
private or public career should have been
mentioned , we surely would have heard it.
There may be other good men in the district ,
who arc aspirants for the same position , who
tliey are we do notknowbutwc do know that
if J. W.Dolan procures tho nomination and he
is elected ( which there is no doubt of ) the citi
zens of D undy county will be represented by
an able and honest senator whose great aim
will be to serve his constituency in everything
which is right and to their interests. Benkel-
mau Pioneer.
The Prohibition Convention.
Agreeably to call , about a dozen gentlemen
met at the court house on Saturday last. W.
O. Norval of McCook called the meeting to
order , whereupon C T. Livermore was elected
chairman , and I. T. Birdsall of Valley Grange ,
secretary. Considerable speaking was indulg
ed in , mostly to the effect that tho grand old
republican party was equal to the occasion
and that a new party was not needed to accom
plish prohibition. Among those who spoke in
this strain were Judge E. S. Hill , S. R. Smith ,
Rev. C. S. Harrison and Ora Clark. Rev. J.
Leonard , Messrs. Norval , Livermore , Birdsall
and one or two others thought differently and
proceeded to elect five delegates to the prohi
bition state convention as follows : C. T. Liv
ermore , I. T. Birdsall , W. O. Norval , J. A. Tay
lor and McGrue The following county
central committee was then chosen :
Willow Grove W. O. Norval.
Red Willow J. A. Taylor.
Valley Grange I. T. Birdsall.
Indiauola C. T. Livermore.
Driftwood Lewis Fauss.
East Valley E. T. Ellis.
On motion the committee was empowered
to fill the balance with one member from each
jjrecinct in the county not already named.
