State Republican Convention.
The republican electors of the state of Ne
braska are invited to send delegates from the
several counties to meet in convention at
Lincoln , Wednesday , September 29,1880 , at 7
P. M. , for thcpurposeof placing in nomination
candidates for the following state ofllces :
Governor.
Lieutenant-Governor.
Secretary of State.
State Treasurer.
Auditor of Public Accounts.
Coininis'ion'r of Public Lands and Buildings.
Superintendent of Public Instruction.
AttorneyGeneral. .
And for the transaction of such other busi
ness as may properly be presented to the
convention.
The several counties are entitled to repre
sentation as follows being based upon the
vote cast for Leavitt Burnham , in 1885 , for Re-
gentof the University , with one delegate from
each county for every one hundred and fifty
votes and the major fraction thereof , and one
delegate at large from each county :
PERSONS unacquainted with the inne
facts might suppose the wet goods organ
to be-honestly supporting G. L. Laws
for secretary of state , perforce of loca
pride , or some other purely disinterest
ed motive. Those cognizant of the rea
status of affairs , however , understand
full well that the saloon spigot ostensi
bly supports Mr. Laws in the hope tha
he may secure the nomination , thus
making a vacancy in the TJ. S. land office
at this place , which "the man Friday'1
vainly hopes to have his bloated , guz
zling partner at Hastings fill. Hence
the whyness of the spigots dear , disin
terested urging.
Hox. G. L. LAWS , of McCook , will
go into the state convention on the 29th
of September as a candidate for Secre
tary of State with the solid delegations
of the Republican Valley district at his
back. This will be a support of such
proportions as cannot fail to commend
the attention of that assembly to
worthy and just claim. Mr. Laws has
been a wheel horse in republican ranks
during a long residence in Western
Nebraskahe , is highly respected citizen ,
a competent business man , an old vet-
.eran whose badge is a cork leg , and he
comes up as the unanimous choice of a
large section of the state rightly enti
tled to ask recognition. Hastings Ne-
braskan.
As evidence accumulates THE TRIB
UNE of a verity is becoming solicitous
lest its aged contemporary at the county-
seat is gradually dropping into that un
happy state , designated in modern par-
. lance as innocuous desuetude. We re
cently , with a great flourish of trumpets ,
announced to his constituency the re
turn of its editor to the realm of poli
tics ; we did so with sensations akin to
those the sorrowing father experienced
upon the return of the prodigal son ,
with the joy that the sad-eyed astrono
mer welcomes the reappearaace of a
brilliant star in the heavens , which have
been a dull and uninviting void since
the b. s.'s fleeting , yet transcendently
majestic and victorious march through
the firmament. It was with feelings
such as we have above faintly attempt
ed to depict that we welcomed the re
turn of Bro. Bishop into the boiling ,
seething maelstrom of political life in
which he is want to disport himself with
the ease , grace and dignity of a storm-
king. For this our mercenary quill
propeller rewards us with , "Are you
paid for it ? " 0 , base , ungrateful man ,
not in silver and gold , but in seeing
Richard himself once more , remitting
and retaining , raising up and laying
low , herein is glory , honor , wealth and
Jiappiness.
THE report that a new extradition
treaty between the United States and
Great Britain has been signed still lacks
official confirmation. Unofficial advices ,
however , from both Washington and
London announce that such a treaty
has been arranged , though it may not
go to the senate at the present session.
The present treaty stipulation between
the two countries authorize extradition
only in cases of murder and forgery.
It is understood that the new treaty en
larges the list of extraditable crimes , so
that defaulters , embezzlers and dynami
ters ttill be included among the crimi
nals that may be delivered over to the
authorities of the country whose laws
they shall violate. It is remarkable that
such an arrangement was not made long
ago , in view of the asylum offered by
Canada to criminals from the United
States , but it would appear that it had
to wait until England felt the nesessity
of such a treaty as a means of protec
tion against the dreaded dynamiter.
The treaty would be in the interest of
justice , and both countries would derive
advantage from it.
THE senate appears to be waking up
a good deal lately and the debates are
beginning to be remarkable for their
personalities , rivalling the rows in the
house. There are indications that pres
idential ambitions are not wholly dis
connected with these outbursts of ill-
feeling. Edmunds has had some sharp
mills with Logan and Ingalls , and In-
galls struck out viciously for Miller's
countenance the other day , and pro
voked the New Tork millionaire to the
declaration , a la Cobb , that he didn't
dare to say it out doors. But it stoppet
there and neither gentleman made a
movement toward the door to have i
out according to the Marquis of Q's
justly celebrated rules. Of course the
senate should show some life , but per
haps it is overdoing it in this suddei
revival. Journal.
THE fact that nearly every member
of the house is of the opinion that the
rules of that body don't take cognizance
of fisticuffs indulged in by members in
the lobbies , is a pretty good indication
that they are rather glad that Mr. Lain
gave Mr. Cobb a lesson in good man
ners. According to all the evidence in
he had needed an admonition. He has
been travelling on his muscle ever since
he has been in the house and has taken
great pleasure in using brutal language
towards those with whom he came in
contact in debate. He will be quieter
hereafter.
THE House of Representatives stand
firm in the matter of the repeal of the
pre-emption , timber-culture and desert
land laws , and refuses to concur in the
senate's amendment. So the probabil
ities are that the laws will not be re
pealed at all.

late pieces , is finished , and stacks of golden

the prospective yield , which is a good quality
and promises a good quantity.
Saturday and Sunday nights we were fa
