chair , and has just carried a crank safe
ly through the whirlpool Niagara.
A LIQUOR law , introduced into the
Ohio assembly provides that nobody
shall sell , give or furnish intoxicants to
be used as a beverage to any person
who is not a legal habitual drinker , and
does not have with him a certificate
showing that he is such a drinker. Any
resident of Ohio more than twenty-one
years of age may become a legal habitual
drinker by making affidavit before the
probate judge of his county , registering
his name , age , residence and occupa
tion , and paying fifty cents for registry
and certificate , which the judge will
thereupon issue. Selling to a non-reg
istered drinker is a misdemeanor punish-
ishable with fine and imprisonment.

THE Benkelman bank failure has
beeruthe topic of all others most dis
cussed , the past ten days. The steal
will amount to from $5,000 to $8,000.
The loss falls heaviest upon the settlers
in that vicinity. Beltzer would make
a nice ornament to a hemp rope. Mrs.
Beltzer , as a commencement in another
chapter in the affair , has applied for a
divorce on the charge of cruelty and de
sertion. People should profit by this un
fortunate occurrence and deposit their
funds with responsible parties , here
after. And just here let us remark
that a safe , set of books and the requis
ite stationery does not necessarily con
stitute a responsiblebank.
THE Yoice grows more and more ju
bilant and triumphant about the pros
pects of the Prohibitionists , and more
and more tauntingly imperious towards
the saloon Republicans. There is no
doubt of the Prohibitionist party , and
just as little that it is exhibiting a fervor
and earnestness which have not been
seen in politics since the war closed.
It is the only party in the field to-day
which has real beliefs and real hopes ,
and it has undoubtedly thoroughly
frightened the distilling and brewing
interest. All this is due not so much
to the increase of drinking among indi
viduals as to the growing power of the
saloon and saloon-keeper in politics.
The limits of American patience on this
matter have nearly been reached. The
spectacle presented year by year by the
Boards of Aldermen and Gouncilmen
in our great cities , composed largely of
ignorant , venal liquor-dealers , and
liquor-dealinggamblersandby the pow
ers and influence which these wretches
possess in the councils of both political
parties , is getting to be more than the
people can bear. Whether liquor-drink
ing can be abolished or not , the "liquor
power' ' will have to go before long.

ing Register G. L. Laws as a candidate
for Secretary of State. We know he is
a tip-top man. York Republican.
AT present it looks as though Jim
Laird will have a walk-away if he de
sires a renomination for congress in
his district. Gaslin's boom fails to

SOME person whom nature unwitting
ly obscured by the name of Brownfrom ,
Hitchcock county we believe , wants to
be State Senator. Let's see , Brown ,
Brown , seems as though we had heard
the name before , somewhere.
SENATOR DOLAN is quite prominent
ly spoken of as his own successor in the
Senate , and , should he be the choice of
the republican convention we would give
him a hearty and conscientious support ,
believing him to be a man of cool and
decisive judgement and pure motives.

heard a real out and out democratic
speech for many years , until they listen
ed to Yan Wyck at the Wymore cele
bration. They were pleased with the
speech , but are not altogether delighted
with the near prospect of having him in

HON. G. L. LAWS' boom for Secre
tary of State has assumed such propor
tions as to brook no opposition. Be
cause of his honest and impartial ad
ministration of the McCook Land Office ,
his elevation to this position would be
a source of gratification to the better
element of both political parties of West

BULLY COBB of Indiana , member of
the Committee on Public Lands , has
been barking up the wrong tree again ,
and has come to grief and gore. Once
more he has seen fit to apply a villain
ous epithet to Congressman Laird , which
the latter resented forcibly , much to
the disadvantage of the Iloosier bully's
"smeller. ' ' While THE TRIBUNE depre
cates this style of procedure , Congress
man Laird had every provocation in the
world to use the severe , and ordinarily
unwarranted , means he did. Cobb spread
on more than any honorable man ought
to endure , and "Our Jeems'1 promptly
punished his audacity and over-presump
tion in a manner thoroughly satisfacto
ry to his constituents.
