THE STORIES OF DHOUTH.
From tho Iowa State Register.
For two or three weeks there have been
stories of drouth and grasshoppers In Dakota ,
Western Nebraska , and Western Kansas.
Some of these have appeared in The Regis
ter. Wo are now in receipt of vigorous de
nials of the reports from gentlemen , former
residents of Iowa , whose word we know to
be true. An old and valued , reader of Tim
Register sends the following denial , the
truthfulness of which we would be willing to
guarantee.
McUooK. Neb. , JiineSO , ! & % . Editor State
Register , I came to Iowa over thirty years
: igo was south four years shooting JJemo-
crats farmed the rest of the time I was
there. Was in Dallas county sixteen years :
came here two years ago. There is not half
the sand in the soil here as there is in Dallas
county ; had no drouth here this season , but
an abundance of rain ; have the best garden
now ye ever raised. I never had as good
prospect for crop as 1 have now. It is the
easiest place to raise a crop 1 ever saw , and
the soil works the nicest I ever worked.
Iowa is a good place ; I like it ; but it can't
come up to lied Willow county , Nebraska.
My health is much better here than it was
there ; I live at the northwest corner of Red
Willow county. A small article in The Reg
ister of June 18th in regard to the "drouth
in Western Nebraska , " and the "sandy
States to the west , " calls out this statement ,
and 1 hope you will give this a place in your
columns , as the article referred to does not
give the state of facLs in the case as they
'
exist. It is an entire misrepresentation o'f
the facts so far as Red Willow county is con
cerned. Having been a reader of The. Regis
ter for fifteen years , and knowing its charac
ter for honor and fair dealing , I will make
this statement. THOMAS WHITMKK.
Another letter from the locality says :
McCooiv , Neb. , July 1 , 18SG , Editor State
Register , In weekly addition of Jiuie 18th , I
read : "The dry weather in Iowa is giving
Kansas , Dakota and western Nebraska ii
drouth , and grasshoppers begin to appear in
some quarters. ' " There is no truth iu the
above. It is an entire and complete niisre- ]
re > entation of the facts , so far as this1 part
of Nebraska is concerned. I speak for Red
AVillow and Hitchcock counties. The crops
have not suffered for the want of rain , but ,
on the other hand , we have had plenty of
rain and crops look splendid , as line as I ever
saw. As to the "Sandy State" ' you speak of ,
that , evidently doesnot mean 'Red Willow
county , as there is not one-half the sand in
soil here as there is in Polk county , Iowa.
1 tilled the soil of Polk county for seventeen
yesirs , about eighteen miles northwe > t of Des
Monies , and I know pretty well what it is ,
but it is not as productive as the soil of Red
AVillow county. I came here in 1881 , and
have raised live crops here , and good ones ,
too ; have not had poor crops since I came
here. I can raise sixty acres of corn here as
easy as I could forty there. This is also a
very healthy county. 1 live near the south
line of the county. There are no grasshop
pers here. Jonx I ) . ( < KIVKI : .
In addition to this , Mr. William Coleman ,
also a former and highly esteemed resident of
Iowa , writes us in denial of the statements ,
and also sends us a box of vegetable pro
ducts , the more effectively to disprove the
statement , and also a box of the soil of the
country , which looks as black and rich as
that of Iowa. He also sends a bunch of clov
er , fifteen inches high , and very rank , a bun
dle of rye and also of alfalfa grass , both of
which are of luxuriant growth , and the best
proof of a rich soil , and the best proof that
there has been no drought there.
It is a pleasure to hear these authentic de
nials of the current rumors. All the states
named have thousands of former Iowa peo
ple among them , and it will be a pleasure to
the people of this state , and their old neigh
bors especially , to learn that their new home
is a good one , and all they expected it to be.
KING MILAN'S troubles arising out
of his unfortunate war with Bulgaria
have not ended. He not only lost pres
tige for Servia by being worsted ; but
went to a great expense hich he now
finds it hard to make good. The peas
antry resist the war taxes and drive off
the tax gatherers. From Bulgaria , on the
other hand , no complaint yet comes of
difficulty in meeting.her war expenses.
She feels that she was successful , and
that the struggle cemented her union
with Rouuielia. Servia began her mili
tary operations with the full expecta
tion of indemnifying herself by annex
ing the Widdin district , at least ; and
King Milan even feared that he might
lose his own throne by refusing to take
the field. He may now be lucky if he
Iocs not lose his throne in consequence
) f having taken the field , since his ene-
nies will hardly be slow to make capital
) ut of the burden of war taxes. Bee.
IN the first six months of the year
.here were new railroads laid in the Tni-
ed States amounting to 1,755 mile ? ,
ind it is probable that 500 , or even 000 ,
nay be laid during the year , which
vould be more than in 1884 or 1885.
3very 100 miles of new railroad requires
L vast amount of furniture to go with
t not only rolling stock and railroad
ippurtenances , but houses for new
ettlements.
CONSTERNATION filled every breast in
jhantytown when the left fielder of the
econd nine shouted from the inclosure
rhere the ball had been batted : "Ye'll
lave ter call the gamefellys ; Finnerty's
tig has swallowed the ball. "
IN the excavations at Pompeii a man
ras found on his hands and knees. It
3 supposed that he had hung his trous-
rs upside down on going to bed so that
11 of the change rolled out of the pock-
ts under the bureau. He was engaged
i looking for it when he met his fate.

A SPRINGFIELD belle was visiting in
this city not long ago , and received a
large share of respectful homage from
the leading society young gentlemen.
She commands attention not only for
her personal charms and graces , but for
her mental culture and vivacious con
versation. Before leaving the I'nion
depot in this city for the State capital
the young lady was describing to a
friend of mine , with whom slio. had visit
ed , the "Bloomington kiss , ' ' us she was
pleased to term the salutations which
sonic fortunate but bold admirer was
permitted to give. She said "the first
time she was kissed by a IJioomingtonian
she felt like a big tub of roses swim
ming in honey , cologne , nutmegs , and
cranberries. She also felt as if some
thing was running through her nerves
on feet of diamonds , escorted by angels ,
shaded by honeysuckles and the whole
spread with melted rainbows. " Bloom-
