F. 31. AND E. 11. KIMMELL , Editors and Publishers. State Republican Convention. The republican electors of the state of Ne bruskii arc invited to send delegates from the several counties to meet in convention at Lincoln , Wednesday , September 2 ! ) , 1886 , at 7 P.M. , for thepurpose of placing In nomination candidates for the following state offices : Governor. Licutenant-Governor. Secretary of State. * State Treasurer. Auditor of Public Accounts. Commis'lon'rof Public Lundsand Buildings Superintendent of Public Instruction. Attorney-General. And for the transaction of such other busi ness as may properly be presented to the convention. The several counties are entitled to repre sentation as follows being1 based upon the vote cast for Lcaritt Burnham , in 18S5 , for He- Bent of the University , with one delegate from each county for every one hundred and flftj votes and the major fraction thereof , and ono delegate at large from each county : It is recommended that no proxies be admit ted to the convention excep'tsuch as are held by persons residingin the counties from which proxies arc given. C. B. YOST , D. H. MEIICEK , Secretary. Chairman. Omaha. Neb. , June 20,18SG. CANDIDATES are numerous , but mod est , very. SENATOR DOLAN is being urged by * his friends for re-election The Sena tor's record speaks for itself. Foaredundancy of promise with mani fest incompeteucy to fulfill , commend us to a Democratic platform. STOCKVILLE , be it said to the burg's glory , has a few men of the right sort of vertebrae , and they are reaping a har vest perforce thereof. THE demure meekness of the average candidate nowada's spasseth all under standing , and surety is past finding out ; , En the nation's peril behold how many patriots arise ! DENVER , the Queen City of the Plains , celebrated July fth in a grandly mag nificent manner. Quite a number of McCookites were there and i-eport a glorious display throughout. Do you mind how quiet that Akron gold fever has become ? The proba" bilities arc that the salt has quickly lost its savor , and that there is not enough in it , except the advertising dodge , to work it. THE State Senator nut is the one the newspaper boys throughout the district are all industriously trying to crack. Now is the accepted time to make your noise , about caucus and convention times the other fellows will make' the selection as usual. CLEVELAND has thus far sent in 73 vetoes , while the aggregate of his pred ecessors is but 109. What further com mentary on the imbecility of a demo cratic house need we. A more humiliat ing and ridiculous spectacle were diffi cult of imagination than the present democratic house of representatives. NOTWITHSTANDING Mr. George S. Bishop's vehement denials , the indica tions and whisperings are that , in re sponse to the earnest solicitations of friends , he has again signified his inten tion of entering the political arena. "Another Daniel come to judgement ? " En passant , Mr. Bishop , Hon. G. L. Laws of the McCook land office will be our next State Secretary. WE want it distinctly understood tha't the Valley wants no position on the state ticket except that of Secretary of State , and that to be filled by G. L. Laws , of McCook. * * Never in the history of the state has a man had such general approbation from his own section of the state as G. L. Laws for Secretary of State. Not one word has yet been .said against him. Franklin Echo. BANKSVILLE. 'Kali for the glorious fourth. Grandma Creamer has been visiting witi friends in Kansas. John Jtelph lias just completed the well n Captain Goodwin's. Taylor Richardson is just convalescent with ixspraimlcil auhlc. Cause : liabubnll. Com is growing at a JIaud S. pace , am very little can be found small enough to ad mil of plowing. Rye harvest is now in full blast or rathei lias been , as it is almost cut , and shows a prospect for a good yield. There was a daiico at 3Ir. Burtless' place Saturday evening , the 20th inst. A very en foyable time was had until 13 o'clock , when ' the young people dispersed. Jfessrs. Johnson , Goodenbergcr and Ben jamin have purchased each a mower ant rake and as a consequence the hay market will be glutted , we pappose. Mrs. Captain Goodwin started for Crete , last Wednesday , the 30th , to make a visit to her old home and friends. Master Alf. and Harry accompanied her. Apparently she has not heeded our warning. Verily , a prophet is not known in his own country. We wish her God-speed and a pleasant visit. There was an ice cream and farewell party given at Mr. Harry Tuttle's place , Tuesday evening , the 29th , in honor of Mr. James Houchin , who departs for the east on Mon day , July 5th , for the purpose of bringin back his threshing machine. He will go ami come overland and thrash on his way back. Well we have a base ball club , styled the Red Willow Reds. The club consists of the following members , viz : Jesse Goodwin , Captain and Pitcher. Travis Benjamin , 1st Baseman. Joe Rclph , 2d Baseman. Joe Dodge , Kd Baseman. Harry Benjamin , Catcher. Ed. Lawthers , Left Fielder. Will Tattle , Centre Fielder. Henry Richardson , Right Fielder. Alvin Benjamin , Short Stop. The club played a match game with the Vailtonclub , July 3d , where both science and skill ( ? ) was the order of the game. Look out for us boys ! SIVAIJT. FRONTIER PATRIOTISM. o A few miles north of Box Elder , on the edge of Frontier county , is a thriving settle ment , which seems to have its nucleus at a place called "Centre Point , " at which place a grocery store does a lively business. It was advertised that the people would celebrate at this place on the 3d in an appropriate man ner , and as it was near home , we betook our selves thither in the early part of the day. Hiding over a beautiful country we arrived on the grounds in good season and prepared to drink our fill of patriotism with which the air seemed permeated. A bowery had been prepared to accommo date the crowd which coidd be seen coming from all directions ; some from a distance of 15 miles. At 11 o'clock , A. M. , the people were called to order by the President of the day , Mr. Moss , who introduced the orator of the day , Mr. Godard , whoginde quite a lengthy ad- dress. Several songs were sung by the"choir and things were moving off quite smoothly when there was a terrible explosion , follow ed by a tumult of excited citizens. After matters had subsided a little itwas ascertain ed that the shock and excitement was caused by an outburst of anger and jealousy from one of Centre Point's robust citizens , the cause of which inightbe explained as follows : A few members of the Box Elder choir being present were invited to assist in the singing which they did , but soon found that they were creating no little envy among those who had made special preparation and as soon as these facts were known all retired from the stage at once , and a general hub bub follow ed among those having charge of the pro ceedings ; when all adjourned for dinner. After dinner the program was carried out and several very good speeches were made by Win. Weygint , Rev. Uussel and others. The pyrotechnic display consisted of mina- ture paper cannons which were manipulated by the young lads who had become disgusted with the other proceeding. It seems a good deal like trying to light the wrong end of a Fourth of July torpedo to try to infuse a love of country into the minds of the young before they have been taught to love' their homes. If children love their homes they will love their country. Having done our duty as American citizens should we returned home feeling that we had a pleasant 3d of July. July Cth , 18SG. SELOXN. Farmers are again complaining about the Iry weather and it has only been 10 days since we had a good rain. Boys , always treat your girls to ice cream , . when you take them to a Fourth of July cele bration. Among our friends who attended the cele- > ration at Centre Point we noticed Mrs. I. J. Starbuck , Mr. and Mrs. Weygint. Joe Steph ens , our laughing man , was there , also , Mat. Stewart , with his mate , and there was Chrys- er , the "dude" and Kinghorn the "dandy , " he latter being ambitious no time to lose , i pleasant partner at once he did choose , and hough in years she was much riper he choose o go with Miss Ella Piper.
