The day we celebrate will be fitly ob served at Indianola , Danbury , on the Willow , etc. McCook people will take u rest , this I | year , and will celebrate the day of inde- 1 i pendence elsewhere. j On July 10 , at Hayes Centre , the public school lands of Hayes county will be offered for sale. Danbury is to have a general merchan dise , a drug and a hardware store , we learn , in the near future. Our new postmaster , F. A.Thompson , took charge of the postoffice , to-day. Mrs. John Doner is his assistant. We understand that James H. Gill- more will deliver a free temperance lecture in the city , to-day. We understand that there is a peti tion abroad 1'or the opening of West Dennison . treet on through to West McCook. The city postoffice has been made a third-class ofHce and the department has fixed the postmaster's salary at $1,500 per year. The Hill property on Madison Ave nue has been purchased by Rev. J. S. Kelsey of the Congregational chuch , consideration , $800. The Chief of Police disports himself in a handsome new uniform , brass but tons and all , and looks every inch a veritable "minion of the law. " On and after next week we will have weekly mail from McCook. There will be an effort made to increase it to a tri weekly loute. Hayes Centre News. The poster work and bank checks printed at THE TRIBUNE office , last week , cannot be excelled by any any country office in the state of Nebraska. We will have postoffice order and pos tal note privileges at this office in the near future. To say that they will be highly appreciated is putting it mildty indeed. We learn that Messrs. Jennings & Starbuck propose to move into quarters in the Scott building , and that Golfer & Cordeal will occupy the rooms vacated by them. A gentleman by the name of Camp of Wymore was in the city , Tuesday , on the lookout for a bunch of some 300 feeders , which he desires purchasing in September. The force of men at the brick yard cast of town has been doubled and they are now preparing to turn out 90,000 brick per week. They now have orders in for over 300 , OOu. The absconding bar-tender , * who de parted from Oxford with $80 of his em ployer's lucre , was captured at this place , the latter part of last week , and taken to Oxford for trial. The agricultural society people have secured H. W. Pike's services as solici tor for their premium list. H. W. is now working this city ; from here the various points in the valley will be duly remembered. That was a neat joke the parson per petrated , last Sunday , when he inno cently and quietly inquired of one of the boys who impatiently referred to his chronometer during the service : "Mein freund , wie viel uhr haben sie ? " Elsewhere in this issue will be found the adv. of Pate & Hinman announc ing the service of their thorough bred Holstein-Fiiesian , Fairmont Prince. Cattlemen should not fail to call at the Riverside Dairy and inspect their fine animal. We call upon the city authorities to abate in a measure at least the horde of crooks and prostitutes now making their headquarters in this city. The impres sion should not be allowed to go out that this is a safe asylum of refuge for such outcasts. We learn from reliable source that the contract for the McNeely building has been let and that work on the same will proceed at once. The old foundation stones are being removed and the new foundation , of machine pressed brick , laid in cement , will go up at once. The building will be the same design as the first structure. A X-i The friends at Thornburg , Uayc county , will celebrate ( he glorious daj of independence yn Monily , July 5th The program will consist of a baske picnic , platform dance in the daytime with plenty of refreshments. An oys ter supper in rhc evening. With a view of putting in a line o farmers' hardware , C. P. llinker has been making extensive changes in the interior arrangement of his establish ment , this week , in the way of shelving counters , etc. Part of his stock is nl ready on the shelves. A very exciting runaway occuiredoi Dennison street , yesterday afternoon , happily without injury or damage. This custom of letting teams stand untiet upon our streets merits punishment o no little Severity. The practice is dan gerotts and may result in serious injury. On the occasion of their public in stallation , ( St. John's Day ) last Thurs day , Indianola lodge of Masons very gracefully recognized the merits anc work of their old Worthy Master , S. Stilgebouer of Danbury , by presenting him with a handsome and elegant gold watch. The 'break" made , Saturday noon , on West Dennison street , by a member of the gang of crooks now infesting thi city , should have sent him to the base burner for 30 days , on bread and water. Such demonstrations on our streets in broad daylight are disgusting and dis graceful. The officers of the Masonic Order of this city were duly installed , last Thurs day evening , ( St. John's Day. ) Among the visiting brothers present were Syl vester Cordeal of Akron , W. B. Spain of Indianola and S. W. Stilgebouer of Danbury , all old-time Masons and well along in the order. 'J he festive tramp now pestercth the patient housewife muchly. If the pa tient housewife muchly pestered will gaily ornament , a la pepper-box , the troublesome tramp with bird shot from the family blunderbus ancient , there would soon be a painful paucity of pes tering tramps prolific. Last Thursday evening , the 24th inst. , Constantino Commandery , U. D. , was organized in this city , with E. E. Low- man , E. C. , and Sylvester Cordeal , Re corder. The Commandery begins its existence with an excellent membership of thirteen Sir Knights , and promises to become one of the flourishing orders of the city. Last Thursday evening , R. S. Hile- man of the South Side , lost a valuable and highly prized horse , by lightning. Another horse standing near was also burned by the stroke , but not seriously injured. R. S. has puichased a span of mules , in hopes that those homely and demure quadrupeds will be less "attractive. " The jubilee will open in St. Patrick's church , McCook , on Monday , July 5th. The exercises will be as follows : Mon day , 7 o'clock. P. M. , instruction and benediction. Tuesday , 9 o'clock , A. M. , mass and instruction ; 7 o'clock , P. M. , instruction and benediction. Wednes day , 9 o'clock A. M. , mass and instruc tion ; 7 o'clock , P. M. , instruction and benediction. Thursday , 9 o'clock A. M. , mass and close of mission. THOMAS CULLEN , Pastor. The match base ball game which oc curred in this city , Tuesday afternoon , between the Indianola boys and our lo cal club , resulted in a score of 12 to 10 in favor of the visiting club , much to the disappointment of those who imag ined that McCook would have a walk away. Had Newman done the pitching from the out-start , the result would doubtless have been decidedly otherwise , as his rapid and unexpected style ot'de- livery discomfited the Indianola boys not a little. The game of Tuesday af ternoon will have the effect of bracing our club up. Does it not sound a little oddly in consistent for a boodle-policy organ , that is so distressingly careful about "giving the town a bad name , " to re mark like this : "The present jail has been of good service , but McCook is now in need of something better for jail quarters. Over four cannot be plac ed in the jail at once , and VERY OFTEN there is need for MORE ROOM ! " Rather than see a larger jail , THE TRIBUNE would sooner see the authorities clean out a few of the causes that fill the city cooler. Better strike at the fountain source of these troubles and the need of enlarged city prisons will no longer exist. The people of this city expect the law to be enforced to a reasonable extent at any rate. THE QUILL DRIVERS. A few member ? of the Republican Valley Press Association met in solcnn conclave in this city , Tuesday , as pe announcement. The afternoon wa ? consumed by the press gang in the base ball game , in makingobservations arounc the city , in hunting up old-time friend and acquaintance and the like. After supper , the association held their usual business meeting , in the Commercia House parlors. The following officers were then elected : President , H. M Crane ; Vice President , T. J. Cleaver Treasurer. C. L. Watkins : Secretary , R. B. Wahlquist ; Executive Committee. . Col. T. J. Piekftt , A. J. Graham ant F. Bert Ridley. The other business of the association being duly dispos ed of , the now hungry editors , editor : are proverbial ! } ' hungry or thirsty- adjourned to the banquet hall , where a bountiful feast of the delicacies and good things of the season , such as Host Johnston of the Commercial knows only too well how to prepare , was partaken of , and it is superfluous to indite , was dispatched with evident gusto. At ap propriate periods in the feast were toasts , apropos of the occasion , to which re sponses were made with varying elo quence , forcibleness and poinledness , by Register G. L. Laws , Mayor I. J. Starbuck , J. A. Cordeal , Esq. , Col. T. J. Pickett , A. J. Graham , J. S.LeHew , Esq. , C. L. WatkinsThos. , Golfer , Esq. , and others. After which the party dis persed , no doubt with the feeling that it had been good for them to be here. These are the present ones : T. J. rickett , IJIoomington Guaul. A. J. Graliam , Beaver City Times. W. T. Lindsay , Oxford Standard. T. J. Cleaver , Orleans Tress. C. C. Cliapin , Franklin Echo. F. I3eit Uibley , Culbertson Reveille. Frank Israel , Ueukelinan Pioneer. Watkins , Blue Hill Times. THE TRIBUNE takes pleasure , in this connectioiijin noting the unanimous and enthusiastic support tendered our fellow- townsman , G. L. Laws , for the office of Secretary of State. Such unanimity is exceptional in this country of self-inter est dominant and surely must be grati- ? ying to Mr. Laws , and that he will go into the convention with the enthusias tic support of the Valley , is assured , while substantial evidence is his that his strength will by no means be restricted to the Valley upon convention day. NEAV LAW FIRM Messrs. J.E. Coch- ran of our city and W. S. Morlan of Arapahoe have formed a partnership in the practice of law , to take effect from July 1st. They have secured rooms over Kendall's store , which they will occupy for the present , until their quarters in the new brick which Repre sentative Hocknell contemplates buiid- ng this summer on the lot now occu- jied by the Frees & Hocknell Lumber Co.'s office , are completed. The gentle- nen composing this firm are too well cnown in this part of the Valley , and n this land district , t require any in troduction at our hands. Both our ligh-minded gentlemen of recognized nerit and standing in the profession. .n ' due time , Mr. Morlan will remove lis family to our city and dwell amongst us. The land firm of Cochran & Helm s wot effected by this new arrangement , ) ut will be continued at the old stand. The Ilayden stock was taken posses- ion of , this morning , by A. Yeazle of he Exchange National of Hastings , he laving bought the other mortgagees' in- erest. We understand that Mr. Yeazle vill sell the entire stock in a lump. Vlso , that the Messrs. Harper of Paxton , .11. , old and experienced men in the merchandise business , are figuring on mrehasing the stock. We hope the ru mor may prove true , as these gentlemen vill make a strong addition to the busi ness men of our city. Plans and specifications are now be- ng prepared for the brick which Rep- esentative Hocknell contemplates hav- ng built at once. It will occupy the ) lace of the Frees & Hocknell Lumber Co.'s present office , will be 25x75 as to imensions , two-stories high , and an legant and substantial structure hroughout. LM.8RIGKEY& CO , , THE CLOTHIERS , A BAD FALL. o One day last week , while George , the nine-year-old son of A.W.Ncwland , was about the well , and in some unaccount able manner he fell into it. Mr. Ncw- land was not far distant and saw him disappear , but the shock so unnerved him that it was nearly a minute before he dared approach the well , and when he did , it was with a feeling that his son must surely be dead , as the well is seventy feet deep. It was therefore a glad surprise to hear his son call out : cPa , let down the rope ! " Hallooing back the father asked him if he was hurt , the boy answering , not very much. The rope was quickly lowered and the boy stepping into the bucket was brought to the surface. On examination a slight cut was found on the back of his head , but this did not hurt very much and in an hour he was playing about as usual. Indianola Courier. ASSIGNEE'S SALE.
