WE have it from Mr. "Watkins , late
editor of the defunct Cndianola Times ,
that he has ordered an entirely new out
fit and that he will again engage in the
newspaper business at Tndianola , in the
near future.
SENATOR IXUALLS of Kansas bleed
ing tossed the ycleped Generilsurnam- : ,
ed Sparks , around in the Senate , the
other day , because of that brilliant ( ? )
order , in a manner tending to convince
the General that he is mortal , and be
longs to the noble class that Puck de
lights to portray with pen and brush.
ALL the railroads of New 1'nrk state
are compelled by a law of 1885 to place
automatic couplers on every new freight
car after July ] . ar.d a great man } ' in
ventions of the sort are to be tested at
the yards of the Central at East Albany
the 10th inst. , after which the railroad
commissioners will rocommed the best.
There is a handsome fortune in store
for the inventor who produces an auto
matic car coupler which will secure per
fectsafety combinedwithdurability
and cheapness.
WE see it stated that Zeiliker , the
chronic office-seeker from Franklin , has
pulled out of the race for the nomina
tion for Secretary of State. Tf such is
the case , llegister Laws , should he de
sire the honor , will be the unanimous
choice of the Valley , and will be a for
midable candidate for the Secretaryship ,
in the coming State Convention. The
Valley is entitled to this recognition ,
and no one in the Valley is better qual
ified for the position : no one who would
represent the people with more grace
and efficiency.
A ( ! O VKRX.MEXT ownership of railroads
would possess many features of merit
and advantage , and in a country like
England , where government administra
tion is free from political corruption
and favoritism , there are good reasons
why it should be brought about. But
it would more than double the duties of
government , largely exaggerate the in
fluence and authority of the central
power and of the dominant party , and
these considerations will , for a long
time to come , forbid even the favorable
entertainment of it in the United States.
The bes't we can hope to do is to require
that the owners of railroads shall ex
hibit a fair regard for the public inter
ests , and place the charges on them at
the lowest rates consistent with the
task of earning a moderate profit on
their actual unwatered cost.
Foil preposterous presumption Sparks'
order suspending pre-emption and tim
ber-culture filings probably stands alone
and without precedent , an enduring
monument to ignorance and imbecility.
The idea of a "twofer" ' land commis
sioner attempting to suspend and there
by temporarily annul the force of an
actof the national legislature could only
originate in the erratic imagination of a
man of Sparks'calibre. . No one acquaint
ed with the fundamental principles
of law or government would ever have
shown such profound density of ignor
ance anJ stupidity. It is a severe com
mentary on Larnar's legal perspicacity
that he ever approved such a fool order ,
and his peremptory revocation of the
same is the only mitigating circum
stance connected with the affair. After
such severe and repeated squelchings
and humiliation ? , about the only course
for the commissioner to pursue is to
step down and out , and the benediction
of the people of the great west will
rest upon and abide with him.
