THE announcement of the grand mu
sical festival at Omaha is circulated.
The leading attractions are Pratt , the
well-known musical festival director ,
Fursch-Madi , Agnes Huntington , Ilor-
tense Pierse , Dora Ilenninges , Mr. 0.
L. Fox , Josephine Chatterton , Charles
A. Knorr , James Gill and Win. Broder-
ick. To these are added glee clubs , a
trained chorus of 250 voices , and other
features of note. The festival begins
June 9 and continues four days. The
new and spacious exposition building
will be used , where 5,000 people may
find seats with ease and comfort.
COMMISSIONER SPARKS , of the land
office , states that of the whole public
domain acquired by the government
( about 1,400,000,000 acres ) there re
mains unentered and undisposed of 250- ,
000,000 acres , or a little more than one-
sixth. Five-sixths of all the public
lands acquired by the government , there
fore , and these five-sixths embracing
the most valuable of them , have been
disposed of , and one-sixth only remains.
Of this remnant the commissioner esti
mates that three-quarters , or about
180,000,000 acres , are unavailable for
agricultural purposes. The total area
granted to railroads is 155,000,000
acres , an area larger than the states of
Missouri , Illinois , Iowa and Indiana ,
and equal to eleven per cent , of the en
tire public domain. The value of these
railroad grants is estimated at $5 an
acre , making the whole $765,000,000.
The public lands in Alaska , about 370- ,
000.000 acres , are not included in this
estimate.
AN official circular from the general
manager's office of the Chicago , Burling
ton & Northern railroad announces the
appointment of Mr. W. J. C. Kenyan
as general passenger agent on the new
trunk line which President Touzalin and
and Manager Harris are completing be
tween Chicago and St. Paul. Mr. Ken-
yon is an old time resident of Omaha ,
whose railroad training was obtained in
the B. & M. headquarters under Mana
ger Touzalin and Percival Lowell , now
general passenger agent of the Burling
ton road. Bright , quick and thorough ,
a sound business man and a genial and
popular gentleman both in and out of
business , his steady advancement in
railroading has been due not less to his
own merits and industry than to the
strong friendships which he made among
his employers by his faithful and devot
ed attention to their interests. General
Passenger Agent Kenyon has many and
strong friends in Omaha , who with the
writer will join in congratulating him
over a , well deserved promotion , and the
Burlington & Northern upon securing
so able and worthy a consevator of their
official interests. Beer
