DRIFTWOOD DRIFTINGS.
Mil. EDITOR : I see that our part of
the country is not represented in the
correspondence to any of the county pa
pers. Now , we think so fine a neigh
borhood should be heard from by all
means. Our settlement is between the
Driftwood and Republican , north of
Vailton.
A little rain would be acceptable just
now.
John Wharton has lately fenced a
part of his claim for pasture.
Plows and corn planters are to be seen
going in all directions. A large amount
of corn is being put in.

to the mercy of the squirrels and has
gone to town to clerk in some stere , we
understand.
There has been a school district
formed , this spring , a good sod school
house built , and the children of the
neighborhood are being very ably taught
by Miss Linda Starbuck.
We may mention the names of Messrs.
Strine , WalterSjPafeLincoln , Wharton ,
Button. Adams and Starbuck as among
the foremost in trying to improve this
part of the land of buffalo grass.
A Sunday school was organized , May
9th , with Philip Strine for Superinten
dent. We hope to be able to secure
the services of a minister soon , for we
think no neighborhood thrives so well
as the one religiously inclined.Z. .

The remains were interred in Lougviev

Mr. C. L. Xettleton , whose earthly life wa. '
ended at 3IcCook , Hay 2Cd , 1886 , was one
whose character deserves more than a pass
ing notice. Mr. Nettleton was born in Litch-
field , Conn. , August 11 , 1834. He removed
with his parents in 1833 to Stockbridge , Mass. ,
where his education commenced and contin
ued until early manhood , when he began hia
work as an instructor in the common schools
of his adopted state.
Having a desire for a moie thorough prep
aration for his chosen work , after several
years of successful teaching , he entered as
student the Hudson River Institute at Clara-
rack , X. Y. , and still later the Coopcrstowu
Institute , where he passed his time as both
student and tutor. In 18C2 , when the sons of
the loyal north were voluntarily offering their
services in defence of their country , he and
an older brother , enlisted in the 49th Regi
ment Massachusetts Volunteers aud embark
ed with the regiment for the Army of the
Gulf. They weie stationed in Louisiana am
remained theie until after the surrender o
Vicksburg and Poit Hudson. The energj
which was a prevailing characteristic of Mr
Nettleton carried him beyond his streugtl
and he fell a victim to the malaria of tha
southern land. After the fall of Portlludsoi
the regiment moved to Xcw Orleans and sooi
after was ordered home. Mr. Xettlctou was
at that time so weakened by illness and ex
posurc that the army surgeon told him he
would never live to reach Massachusetts , bti
by his indomitable energy and the carcfu
nursing of his brother , he was spared to read
his home. After months of weariness am
pain he recovered sufficiently to be able to
return to his profession as a teacher ; but the
disease contracted in the army never left him
but was a source of much suffering during hi ;
remaining years and finally terminated hh >
life when it was at the zenith of its power.
After leaving the army lie taught very sue
cessfullv in Lee county , Illinois , but hib
health compelled him , after a few years , to
give up teaching and he came to Red Willo\\
county in 1875. lie was elected County Super
intendcnt of Public Instruction in 1SSO am
ho labored with great zeal and often far be
yond his strength in trying to build up the
schools of the county. His work of six years
in this capacity was a success , but finding
his strength was not Mifiicient for his ambi
tious aims for school work , he declined a re
election and ictired from the position in
January , 1SSG.
He was very decided in his opinion of rigln
and wroilg and always stood firm by his con
victions. At the age of twenty-two j ears lit
connected himself with a church of the Con
gregational denomination and during his life ,
amid all its changes , hib heait remained pe
culiarly tender , and Christian advancement
and Christian labor in any department , had
his faithful support , his careful thought and
his earnest prayers. With the harness on ,
he laid down his work for others to take up
andcarry forward towards completion. With
mind unimpaired , but with a worn and weary
body , he lay down to rest. His example lives
and thus ' 'being dead , he 3"et speaketh. "

are being squeezed out of fair postal
