FIOM General McCIellan's last magazine
article in the May Centuiy , we quote as
ollows : "Generel Lee and I knew each oth
er well in the days befoie the war. We had
erved together in Mexico and commanded
ngainst each other in the Peninsula. I had
he highest respect for his ability as a com-
nander , and knew that he was not to be tri-
ied with or carelessly afforded an opportunity
of striking a fatal blow. Each of us natural- |
y regarded his own army as the better , but i
ach entertained the highest respect for the j
ndurance , courage , and fighting qualities of j
lie opposing army ; and this feeling extended
o the officers and men. It was perfectly nat-
iral under these circumstances that both of
is should exercise a certain amount of cauf f
ion ; I in my endeavors to ascertain Lee's !
trcngth , position , and intentions before I
tnick the final Mow ; he to abstain from any I
extended movements of invasion , and to hold
us army well in hand until he could be satis-
ied as to the condition of the Army of the
'otomac after its second Bull Itun campaign ,
and as to the intentions of its commander. "
