STEADY work at fair wages is better
for workingmcn than high wages for a
few months and long "lay offs" during
the rest of the year.
PRESIDENT CLEVELAND is said to
have let the contract for his wedding
shirt. It has a twenty-inch collar and a
Jeffersonian frill down the front.
IT is estimated that fully 20,000
workingmen in Chicago yesterday won
their point for eight hours' work for
eight hours pay. The men who demand
ed ten hours' pay for eight hours' work
were not quite so successful. In many
instances , however , their demand has
been taken under advisement
THE talking generals seem to be get
ting the bulge on the fighting generals
in the magazines now , and by the time
Uncle Billy Sherman is dead we expect
that it will be definitely settled by the
sound of voices that Grant , Sherman and
Sheridan were frauds and that the men
who saved the union and conquered the
rebellion were Buell , Eosecranz , Mc-
Clellan and Baldy Smith.
DON'T hammer a dead canine. Mr.
Jefferson Davis has , by the lapse of years
since he became defunct , earned the
right for his poor ghost to wander at
will , revisiting the pale glimpses of the
moon. Let no one consider it worth
while to write indignant protests against
any appearance he may make or any
nonsense he may utter. lie is functus
officio. from whatever standpoint you
may consider him.
Du. BILLINGS , the celebrated veteri
narian , has arrived with his family and
will make Lincoln his home. He is an
enthusiast in his profession and will un
dertake in this advantageous location to
make a specialty of hog cholera. He
will attempt first to secure a thorough
knowledge of the as yet unknown path
ology of the disease. Then a remedy.
Ttiere is here a vast field for iuvestiga-
ibn an opportunity for the exercise of
pains , care and diligence almost beyond
comprehension. It is to be hoped Dr.
Billings will meet ample and cordial co
operation and achieve success. Topics.
i THE march of improvement through
out Nebraska is keeping pace with the
rapid settlement and development of the
state. Xew public buildings , court
houses , schools , gas and water works ,
plants for electric light and street car
lines are being constructed in numbers
of our interior cities and townsEn
terprise is holding the fort with a strong
hand and paving the way for such an
enlargement of municipal boundaries
as promises to double our urban as well
as our rural population at the next cen
sus. Back of all lies the state , fertile in
resources , and rich in soil and thrift.
IT appears that Sparks has concluded
not to resign , and will stay to give the
homesteaders and pre-emptors of the
west all the trouble he can , out of spite
for the reversal of his decision by Secre
tary Lamar. He claims that he is enti
tled to all the time he wants to consider
before signing a patent. He therefore
by delay accomplishes everything he
expected to do by his order against the
issuance of patents. The probability is ,
however , that Lamar , good natured and
long suffering as he is , will in due time
let Sparks know that he is a subordinate ,
and will either fire him or know the
reason why patents are not signed.

much pain and suffering. When you want
the best Liniment you have ever had iu the
