T ; u. _ _ . -WS v ' > > -W - > i - -V WN S * We wish now to address ourselves to the voters of the community. Wo am told tli sfc tinru.H m why worn in is not allowed to vote is because ahe .is repre sented by her husbandson , and brother. We will accept this as a fact and plead with them to not misrepresent us.at the coming spring election by placing in of fice men who will not agree to do all in their power to protect us from our cruel and avowed enemy , the liquor traffic. We plead with you for the sake of all we hold most dear on earth the peace and purity of our homes that you place in nomination for onr city officers , men of known moral worth who will regard the interest of the rising generation of boys and girls enough to do all in their power to keep the moral atmosphere of our community pure. As the season adva'nces we shall all have hints and ad monitions on the importance of looking after the sanitary conditions of our sur roundings. But who is there to raise a warning voice against the taint of im morality that surrounds us ? We fear none unless you elect temperance men to to the responsible position of city council men. The fact that licensed saloons are the very hot beds of vice and crime is ac knowledged by all and that the whiskey traffic is the monster evil of our town no thinking person will deny. From the Inter Ocean we take the following : "The three the saloon , the brothel and the gambling hell , go hand in hand ant are the most potent enemies of the home the church , the state. There are two ways of dealing wit ! these evils , the oldest and most preva lent being the European. It is simply toleration and regulation. It is pagan in its origin and is based upon the theory that these evils are to be treated , not as vices and crimes under the stern ban of the law , but a human frailty , to be sanctioned and regulated , that so ciety may escape the minor evils inci dent thereto. The other may be termed the Bible or Christian plan. It treats these evils as great crimes. That it is not only the right , but the duty of so ciety to place them under the ban of the law , that they may be reduced to the minimum , like murder and theft. The first of these systems is expressed by the word license. It means an abject surrender of religion and all the best forces of society to these three evils. It controverts the best instincts of hu inanity and is at variance with the life of Jesus of Nazareth. That it has sur vived so long in so called chiistian coun tries is an anomaly upon which the re cent disclosures in church and state made by Mr. Stead throw a powerful light. It is a veritable sale of indulgen ces , not by priest or pontiff , but by the people , through their , representatives , and it makes the people partisipators in the profits sharers in the blood money and of the responsibility for the ruin and death wrought by it. If this be a true statement is it pos sible that Americans with all their boasted progress will submit to this old pagan idea that these crimes cannot be suppressed but must be regulated. Cit izens of McCook let us away with these old heathenish notions of the total moral depravity of man and rise up in the might of free men and break asunder the chains of this tyrant which has led captive our race for ages. Let us rec ognize the fact that God intended us to be free men and not slaves. Let us recognize the fact that this is the mon ster that has enslaved the human race through all the ages and that it remains For our day and generation to strike off the fetters and let the captive go free. We wish to make one more appeal to those of our citizens to whom we natur ally look for protection. Will you not iclp us in this our hour of need ? It is jut a small thing we ask only to cast your vote for men who are pledged to temperance. Remember if we have sa- oons we must have the brothel and the gambling hell You may feel secure in , -our comfortable homes and think there s no danger for your sons and daughters. > ut will you not in the name of the Good Man who said , ' 'It is more blessed to give than to receive , " grant your protec tion to those who have not the safe guard-thrown around them ? Think of the many hapless ones who come in daily contact with the foul taint of the above mentioned places and then remember Jod has constituted every man his > rothers keeper to the extent of his abil- ty. The time has gone by when you nay say , "If a man wants to drink let iini it is no business of mine. " It is our duty to protect him , for the fact ic wants to drink , in the face of all the lorror that drunkenness brings , shows hat he is not able to protect himself. \.s if a little child were seen playing in street and a runaway team coming in ts wake , would not every man run to he rescue and save its life at the risk f his own. s - , . . - . : * : \ r v . .
