Sonic of the most meritorious cases , we are in formed , winch have gone up from this office have been refused. Won't some one decoy the "general" out to this vicinage for about one holy minute. There would be the grandest extinguish ment on record. JOHN B. GOCGII , the veteran temper ance lecturer , is dead. IFe was a na tive of England , and came to this coun try during early manhood to follow his trade of book binder. lie became a drunkard , but finally reformed and en tered the temperance field as a lecturer. He continued to preach temperance un til a few months ago , when he became physically unable , owing to age and other causes , to carry on the work any longer. 31 r. Cough was an eloquent orator , not not only upon his favorite Uhciuo of temperance , but upon many father vital questions of theday ! " ' 'No' man ever lived who worked harder to promote temperance , and the cause has lost in his death its most brilliant advo cate. Bee. Wur.x man began first to issue from the darkness of ignorance he was full of j habits of crime and vice. By and by he learned more. lie committed fewer crimes , but assumed new viocs. Grad ually he relegated some of his vices into the category of crimes , and enacted laws against them. A vice may be de fined as something that is wrong , but not j sufficiently disastrous to the public interest as to demand special and direct punishment. A man grows in intelli gence and moral vices are more and more damaging and dangerous , and arc there fore being gradually and steadily rele gated to the list of eiimcs , to be sup- I pres.-ed by lavDrunkenness is an in stance of a vice that is just now being classified where it belongs. It is essen tially a crime against the body politic , and will shortly be so recognized by the laws of all states. Topic ? . GIMKALLY speaking , this woild ha1 * become a cold , selfish affair , and men are a mockery upon the Divine plan of crea tion. ( Joel intended that men's interests should be mutual , and that we should not live for self alone. _ AiV < can only reach the climax of human existence , Avheu we have fully comprehended this Divine arrangement , and our thoughts of self are overshadowed by the dcfcire to t assist our fellow man to bear the trial * and burdens of life. Tin's is a funda mental law of our being , and enters J largely into the Christian religion. We are born with an instinctive impulse to assist others , and we render our lives happy and useful , just in proportion as we cultivate this impulse. To help one another to a complete development of the poweis and faculties God has given up. with a view of making this life but preparatory to that to come , is our mis sion here , and we arc rewarded accoid- ingas we perform our duty here. This is our conception of truechiistianity. Exchange. i - .Mr. X. < ; . ifonlder , Mipeiinti'iidenttur tlio ! BnuMreet rercantili * Agency.
