AKRON , COLORADO.
ED. TRIBUNE : It was uiy pleasure on
Thursday of last week , Dec. iJlst , 1S85 ,
to visit Akron , Colo. , in search of land.
I found Akron situated in Weld county ,
on the main line of the B. & M. R. R. ,
(0. ( "B. & Q. 11. R. , ) 142 miles west of
McCook , Nebraska , and about 60 miles
\vcsl of the Nebraska state line. You
will sec by looking at thu nr.tp of Ne
braska and Colorado that Northepstrrn
Colorado , in reality , was carved out of
Southwestern Nebraska , ami if this M-C-
tion had been taken in with Nebraska ,
the lands that are now vacant would
have been settled many months ago.
Here in Northeast Colorado , and in the
vicinity of Akron , arc as fine praiiie
lands awaiting the tettler to make his
lutuie upon as can be found in the Great
iVi'st. This section is i oiling prairie
lablo hnul , with just enough draws and
ra\iin > > ti give the iaid : a jjood draiiiriirt : ,
and whole townships , have not tv.-n sec
tions of waste and broken land in theii.
And a person has only to see these lands
and he is at once satisfied with them.
Tin : SOIL
Ts the same as Western Nebraska , a
dark loam where same is cultivatedbut ,
where uncultivated it is of a lighter col
or caused by prairie fires over pasture-
age. As soon as fire guards are put
around the land and it is cultivated to
growing crops , which shades and pro
tects the soil from sunburn , and buffalo
grass subdued , the soil is dark , and is
from 14to 3 feet deep. Blue-joint
grass also has a tendcnc3 * to protect the
soil and give it a darker appearance than
buffalo grass. All that Northeastern
Colorado needs is the homestead settler ,
then follows civilization and cultivation ,
and that is the whole of it. And here
then will be one of the finest sections
of land with a good climate as is in the
west. The water in this section is al
most as soft as rain water , and quite
near the surface , the. depth of a few
wells in this vicinity being as follows :
Northeast quarter section 23-2-55 , well
21 feet deep : northwest quarter section
2S-2-52 , well 21 feet deep ; northwest
quarter section 20-2-52,9 feet ; southeast
quarter section 8-2-52 , well on Lincoln
Land Co. town ? ile 70 feetdeep ; south
west quarter section 8 2-52 , B. & M. R.
well , 45 feet deep. Rock Springs 4
mies ! northwest of'Akronand , there are
several springs south and northeast.
The creator of this beautiful country
did not forget to give it plenty of good
water , and don't you foget it. A fine
quality of building rock can be had with
in a few miles of Akron.
AKKOX
Ts a division station on the B. & M.
11. R. The company have a roundhouse
here , an eating house of the same size
as at Red Cloud and 3JcCook. ice house ,
station , depot , coal shed and section
house. The Lincoln Land Co. own the
town site , ' and a more beautiful town
site is not to be found west of McCook ,
Neb. , and wiil be the booming city of
Northeastern Colorado. Twenty-seven
buildings nre under contract at this date ,
none of which are less than 22x40 feet
in size. We weie very much pleased
with this part of the country , and hope
it will be our lot to visit here again soor.
Fours very truly ,
W. S. WHEELEK , McCook , Neb. ,
Pastor of M. E. church.
Sin : was a remarkable young lady
who made the request of her friends
that after her decease she should not
be buried by a brook , where babbling
lovers would wake her from her dreams ,
nor in any cemetery , where sight-seers ,
conning over epitaphs , might distract
her , but be laid away to take her last
bleep under the counter of some mer
chant who did not advertise in the news
papers. There , she said , was to be
found peace surpassing all understand
ing a depth of quiet si umber , on which
neither the sound of the buoyant foot of
youth nor the weary shuffle of old age
would ever intrude. Ex.
