The Band of Hope made a very cred

Great Bcduction in Watches and
Jewelry at McCrackcn's.
We hear considerable complaint about
the closing up , . atdifFercutpoints.of the
road leading north from this place to the
Willow. Several parties have experi
enced .so much difficulty on account of
fences , bad roads , etc , that they have
gone elsewhere to do their trading.
This matter should receive prompt at
tention. The old road was indeed exe
crable , but Ihe fencing in of various
claims has made matters much worse.
Our merchants can not afford to have
their trade diverted from its proper
channel by poor highways.

SuoiiTLY MISTAKEN We are re
quested by James Ellison of Box Elder
to correct the statement made in last
week's Democrat to the effect that he
had disposed of his ranch hear Box El
der. The fact is , Mr. Ellison only sold
some stock from his ranch , and not the
ranch property at all. Mr. Ellison has
replaced the stock sold by other and
better grade cattle , , has taken another
claim , since making proof on his pre
emption , and the probabilities are that
he will remain where he is for some
time to come.

There is that in the ordinary appear
ance of our city , which challenges the
admiration of all who visit here , whether
simply for pleasure , as well as for busi
ness. And , by the by , how few indeed
are the cities of this growing common
wealth , where all is activity , where cit
ies arc rapidly assuming proportions
metropolitan , where the hamlet of to
day is the stirring village of to-morrow ,
where wild prairie is being transformed
into peaceful and prosperous agricultur
al communities , that can approach the
"Magic City of the Upper Bepublican"
in material advancement. And what of
the brightness of our future prospects ?
To be given away ! Inquire at Mc
Crackcn's Jewelry Store.
There are now in full blast at least
three and possibly five , gambling hells ,
operated in the main by the same gang
of sneaks who attempted to down the
unsophisticated during the horse fair ,
with their nefarious games. THE TRIB
UNE will take occasion to "name right
out in church" who are managing these
dens , and where they are located , for
those in authority. This open violation
of law is a disgrace and a blot upon the
fair escutcheon of our city.

MEMORIAL SERVICES.
It is with a feeling of pride that we
note the memorial services held at the
Opera HallTuesday afternoonin honor
of our departed and honored Vice-Pres
ident , Thomas A. Hendricks , who pass
ed from this earthly scene suddenly at
his home in Indianapolis , Ltd. , Wednes
day of last week. Cut down in the zen
ith of his glory. Although the services
were th'e.result of a short season of
preparation , when the hour appointed
had ai rived , the Opera House was crowd
ffl to overflowing with our citizens and
school children , all to pay the last be
fitting tribute to a great man , to the na
tion's dead , regardless of paity , and the
manner in which the meeting parsed
off was highly complimentary and sat
isfactory. After a few introductory re
marks by 1 ujtii ; > A. Wilcox , president
of the occasion , the following program
was carried out :

Heading of Jit-solutions By A. P. Letvli.
Music By the Choir.
Benediction By Uev. "W. S. Wheeler.
We have not the available space to
detail the ten-minute speeches made by
the above-named gentlemen , but will
tersely remark that they were of a uni
formly patriotic character , tender and
eulogistic of the dead statesman's life
and character and public services. The
address made by Mr. Ryan indicated the
greatest care in preparation , and was a
most worthy effort. The services
throughout were such that all present
were pleased and glad that they had
been present. Below we give the reso
lutions unanimously adopted by the
meeting :
MKMOHIAI. liKSOI.UTlOXS.
WHEKEAS , Hon. Thomas A. Ilendrieks ,
Vice-President of the United States , departed
this life on the "Oth tilt. , we bow our heads
with grief and our hearts are tilled with
mourning for the loss of our honored Vice-
Jluler ; and while we bow in humble submis
sion to the divine will , may it not be that
these visitations of providence which smite
down men in high places and touch the heart
of the country , come to bring to us the whole
some reminder that a common fate awaits
men of all parties ; to soften the asperities en
gendered by partisan strife ; to silence for a
time the din of political warfare ; to teach all
Americans the lesson of a closer fraternity
and move them to a nobler citizenship.
THKHEFOKE , As a token of honor and es
teem for the memory of our illustrious dead ,
we , the citizens of the city of McCook' , adopt
these resolutions :
Be IT ItBsoi.VEU , That in the life of Thos.
A. Hendrjcks we recognize the highest type
of American citizenship , whose personal in
fluence will remain a priceless heritage to us
who live after him. As in life it dulled the
edge of political rancor and won that tribute
of respect from all that is given to a pure
man in every personal attribute. An upright
man , lovely in all his private relations , clean
in all his public expressions , ho in death it
mingles with the unaffected sorrow of the
time , a chastening and purifying influence.
tVround the bier of our dead ruler let no par
tisan lines be drawn , but let us follow his re
mains to their final resting place , all borrow
ing Americans together.
BE IT FuimiKR Jcsoi.vin , That we ten
der to the widow of our beloved Vice-Presi-
dcnt , our sincere sympathy and condolence
in the hour of her sore bereavement , and di
rect that she be furnished witli a copy of
these resolutions , and that they be published
at large over the state.
