Official City and County Paper.
TuBrcBtiltof Tuesday's election indi-
catofi clearlyand in tones unmistakable ,
the temper of that portion of the voters
of this county who have ever been "left
out in the cold , " through the over-reach
ing selfishness of some on the one hand
and treachery at home on the other. It
shows a determination to no longer
brook humiliation and defeat through
an inclination , which has heretofore op
erated , to concede and compromise ,
when such measures , so conducive to
party harmony and success , are not ap
preciated and recognized. It is the ex
pression of a desire for equity , long
denied , hut finally compassed , by a pop
ular and almost unanimous recognition
of the local issue forced upon them. An
issue at once impolitic and unnecessary ,
in view of the honorable and more than
equitable concessions and overtures
made on the part of the leaders in this
section of the county , to no avail. So
r
much for the "straws. "
The principle , as well as many of the
fruits , of a refusal to ratify party nomi
nations , is not without its undesirable
phaees , and is scarcely less reprehensi
blc than the spirit of selfishness , whicl
makes such courses necessary at times
* * . in order to secure just representation
It is the exception not that based 01
trivial or personal differences but tha
having justice and fiairness on its side
that is worthy of defense.
TIIK TRIBUNE hopes the situation wil
be taken in good part , that the lesson
may be a profitable one , and thai in the
future self and locality may not assume
everything , but that the existence ol
vary locality will be recognized am
their several righteous claims be proper
ly met.
In concluding this homily we rccog
nize that some feeling has been engcn
tiered , perforce of Tuesday's results ,
but the issue strictly a local one was
not invited by the voters of this city ,
but when it was forced upon themthey
tosk hold of the most potential means
at their hands to sustain their city , in
dependent of party affiliations.
TUB Democrats confidently assert
that Mississippi has gone Democratic.
THE United States army must be mo
bilized at once. The blood-curdling cry
of 'Settlers in Oklahoma" is sounded.
Fall into rank , move rapidly upon the
enemy and find nothing.
THE mine of fourth class postofficei
a rich one and is still worked with a full
force. The rate of removals for offens
ive partisanship is now one hundred a
day. The days are not as long as they
were , either.
MAUK TWAIN always was alectio
peculiar. " Now he don't know whether ,
in the sweet subsequently , he wants to
walk the golden streets , or to perambu
late tho murkier regions of his satanic
majesty's domain , observe : "Well , I
don't know where I am going to. It is
a matter of a good deal of doubt , and I
am afraid , of indifference to me , for I
have friends in both places. "
FERDY WARD lias been graciously do
nated ten year's imprisonment at hard
labor as a reward for his bank swindling
operations in connection with the Marine
bank , wherein the departed General
Grant was financially mined. Ward re
ceived his sentence with as much non
chalance as : i veritable buccaneer. The
judge in issuing the decree was sorry
only that he could "noc give the villain
ten years more.
LATER developments reveal the fact
that the rogueries perpetrated by Reno
Montgomery , late of the Cambridge Ka
leidoscope , reach a inifcli larger total
than wa. < at first intimated. It appears
thnfc he forged at least three chcclang-
gregating $2,200 , in addition to forging
his wife's name to a mortgage. lie de
parted hence , in company with another
woman , with about $3,000 in cool cash
in his jeans ; leaving behind him a wife
and baby in destitution. The Chemical
of New York is after him , and unless
he is unusually smooth , he will speedily
ornament ( ? ) tho pen.

OF.THE ELECTION HELD IN
RED WILLOW COUNTY , i
-ON THE-
3d DAY OF. NOVEMBER , 1SS5 :
.
IT is conceded that Hill , Democrat ,
of New York , is elected. Iowa goes
Kepublican.
THE president has issued his procla
mation designating Thursday , Novem
ber 26th , as a day of national thanks
giving and prayer.
A CASE of more than ordinary interest
was decided , last week , at Sutton. A
Mrs. Percival obtained judgment for
$2,500 against John Curran , a saloon ]
keeper , for causing tho death of her
husband , Psrcival , who was about sixty
years of age , who got beastly drunk in
the saloons of Sutton on a winter's day
three years ago , and in the evening
started for home , three miles distant ,
in a heavy snow storm. He was intox
icated , and no doubt fell down and died
from cold. He was found frozen stiff
next morning a short distance from his
"home. This decision carries out one of
the wise provisions of the Slocuin liquor
law , which makes all saloon keepers li
able for any damages resulting from the
sain of intoxicating liquors. Hastings
Gazette-Journal.
THE annual report of the Utah com '
mission has been submitted to the secre
tary of the interior , and shows that the
work of the past year has met with some
gratifying results. The point has surely
been reached where no person living in .
polygamy can vote or hold office. Not
withstanding this nearly all the officers
chosen at the last election were Mor
mons who , although they do not actu
ally live in poligamy , subscribe to the
doctrine of plural wives. The commis
sioners say there have been but few po
lygamous marriages during the pastyear
but this arises from the enforcement of
the present laws and not from any
change of sentiment on the part of the
Mormons. Should any weakness be
shown in enforcing the laws , the report
states that polygamy marriage would be
as frequent as ever. The course of cer
tain polygamists in declaring their in
tention of obeying the law in the future
1ms aroused the wrath of the church.
This shows evidence of internal dissen
sions and is an encouraging sign. The
commission urges that no step backward
be taken in legislature , as it would give
great aid to the church in crushing out [
this growing spirit of opposition. :
