SIBERIAN cats arc the newest agony in pets. A Siberian cat has a cold and searching voice , and is a valuable addi tion to the back yard orchestra. Hart ford Post. ADVICES from Washington are to the effect that the administration offered the late General 3IcClollan the post of minister to "Russia , which he declined , and that on ihe day of his death Mr. Cleveland had determined to appoint him on the civil .service commission at a sal ary of thirty-five hundred a year. The general was spared that humiliation at least. Journal. IT is the opinion of the"receiver of the firm of Grant & Ward and of the attor neys 'who prosecuted and convicted Ferdy , that Ward has concealed some where from one to one and a half mil lions of money stolen from General Grant and other victims of his confidence game. It has been developed from the books that Ward never made an entry of the money he got out of General Grant from time to time on one and another pretext , but salted it down for his privy purse. State Journal. VEGETARIANISM has spread and is spreading very rapidly in London. Ten years ago it was difficult to find an avow ed vegetarian , but now more than two thousand persons refresh themselves at vegetarian restaurants. Within the last Few weeks two new places have been opened , pledged to provide a vegetarian dinner of three courses for thirteen cunts a price which is , of course , a very tempting one in the metropolis particu larly and the number of dinners served ! as increased until now it has reached about eight hundred daily. IT is not gold or gods that makes a man wealthy. The best wealth is of the leart , enlightened mind , a loyal con science and pure affections. He is wealthiest who has the largest stock of wisdom , virtue and love j whose heart ) eats with warm sympathy for his fel- ow man ; who finds good in all seasons ind all men. The generous man who > ities the unfortunate poor man who or- lers well his life , the loving man who clings to his family and friends , the tudious man who seeks instructions in ill things , are the truly wealthy men. Exchange. THE women who look well in short lair are few in number and hard to find. ? he average female skull is not , when aid bare by the ruthless hand of thede- troying barber , a thing of beauty nor a oy forever. The average female face ivine , when shorn of its background of ilken tresses , looks too often like an unripe and undeveloped carrot. The ivcrage female ear will not bear up un- er close inspection , although it may be arge enough and vigorous enough to trike out independently and fearlessly from the head. Theface of a woman loses its charm and becomes the mug of an underdone boy. Chicago Mail. SOME ladies and gentlemen of Pitts- burg are organizing a society for the pro tection of married women , the chief ob ject being the creation and maintenance of a fund for the prosecution of wife- beaters. Such an organization with a large membership roll would do good , indirectly as well as directly. The col lection of a trifling admission fee from each member and the designation of an even smaller amount as dues would raise money enough to pay for counsel in many such cases , and the awakening of public opinion on the subject that would follow the announcement of the move ment would tend to encourage the courts to make the sentences of convicted wife- beaters as severe as the law allows. It might even result in the passage of a law making the penalty severer. TIIK reasonly Chamberlain's Cough Hemerty is a favorite with .so many people is because it can always be depended upon. It's prompt and effectual cures of coughs , colds , croup and whooping cough , have made it standard and those who have used it prefer it to any other. Sold by 31. A. Spalding and A. J. Willey.
