D. , died North Platto , Sunday afternoonat 5:30. : The intelligence will be received with the deepest regret. The couse of his death was paralysis. THE young women in attendance upon the Missouri university are in open re bellion against an order from the facul ty requiring them to wear a uniform .hat. The darlings are right. No fool chump of a man should be allowed for one moment to believe that he can select a hat for one woman , much lets a hun dred. The idea is preposterous even for a Missouri educator. Topics. THE people who once knew 11. H. Montgomery , late editor of this paper , will in all probability know him no more. He forged his wife's name to a $250 mortgage , and drew $700 at the Arapa- hoa bank and skipped. He left his wife and child in destitute circumstances , flilty's restaurant suffered to the amount of $30 for boardand , many other houses he failed to make settlement with. "He played his hand" for all it was worth this time , and should he be caught it would be made warm for him. Cam bridge Kaleidoscope. THEY do queer things in Switzerland , considering-tbat the Swiss eulogize their country as "the land of liberty. " The children of poor people are regularly hired out by auction in some cantons. There was a most painful scene recently in the market place of Biela , town near Berne , where , in spite of the heart rend ing appeals of a. widowed mother , the four young children , ranging from 2 to 10 , were "placed" out for a year to the highest bidder by the public crier , the family being thus broken up and sepa rated for fear lest the woman should be compelled to seek for assistance from the town. This is really very nearly as bad as the old slave sales in America , and I should doubt whether there is any other county in Europe where such an infamous system exists at the present time. The Swiss , in reality , are a sor did , huckstering race. THE spirit of embezzlement is run ning riot with such unusual fierceness that it has caught an editor in a mo ment of weaTcness and floored him. A. B. Lewis of the Scotia Tribune has de parted from among us with $3,500 in currency in his pocket and sensations of pain and mortification behind him. The money and sensations both belong to other people. He first started on the downward path by becoming involved in a heated personal argument with a brother editor. From this the descent was easy to crimes which , while no more reprehensible , are looked upon more coldly'by the public and are punishable by law. Let it be a warning , brethren , that we preserve our amity. People do not think any too much of amity as a rule , but after wide observation and careful experiment we conclude that it is the sustaining keystone of the arch of virtue. Topics. SHERIFF S. L. KENDALL , of Weld county , Col. , armed with a requisition from Governor Eaton , of that statevis , ited Aurora , in this state , and arrested Scott Ellis , janitor of Cayuga Lake Academy , and brought him to Auburn and locked him in a cell in the jail. El lis is charged with being implicated in the murder of a ranchman named Til- Ian , in Weld county , Colo. , about one year ago. The Sheriff will start with his prisoner forthwith for Greeley. The body ot % Tillan , the murdered man , was found hanging in his ranch one morn ing and it was supposed he had commit ted suicide. The fact , however , that no money could be found about the ranch excited suspicion. Ellis and a suspect ed accomplice left the place suddenly , but the latter was promptly pursued and arrested. Officers and detectives have been searching for Ellis ever since he left the scene of the murder and event ually traced him to Aurora. Ellis de posited SljOOO in the bank at Auburn as soon as he arrived from the west N. Y. tferald.
