The longer the stay of the News representative at Mc- , Cookthe more he isjmpressed with the importance of the new young city of the Republican Valley. Our readers have been advised through these dispatches uf the building boom in progress and the rush for the fine land adjacent to McGook. The Burlington road has es tablished a round-house here of eighteen stalls , built of stone , which would indi cate that the road regards this us a de sirable point , and they mean theestab lishment of general shops here. It is surprising to notice the great in terest taken by the people in fine stocks of all grades. The exhibition of draught stock mentioned yesterday would be creditable to any of the older stock re gions of the east , and the show for premiums this , forenoon of registered and roadster horses was superb , in dicating that horsemen here arc secur ing the best breeds , and will , in a short time , be able to turn out as fine a lot of equines as arc to be seen anywhere. PRESIDENT WHITE'S farewell address to the students of Cornell University was replete with common sense , which was pre-eminently sound. "Do not try to be smart , " he said , "but do every thing that comes to your lot in a faith ful and satisfactory manner. " The ambition to be smart is the curse of the generation. The smart man is not willing to stop long enough to do anything well because he wants to do everything in fiiteen minutes and spend the rest of his life in adoring his own wonderful interior. He starts with a series of kangaroo leaps , and is more than likely to end one of them by land ing in an unexpected ditch. There are a great many smart men in prison and a very considerable number have retreated to Canada. They go up like rockets and come down like charred sticks. ' Go slow. Recognize the fact that you are not a genius , and that consequently you must work hard for what you get. And above all things do not try to be smart. N. Y. Herald. THE Turkish Empire has been known for many years as the , "Sick Man of the East , " and this title was first given to it jy Nicholas , Czar of Russia. On the night of the 9th of January , 1853 , the English Minister at the Russian Court , Sir George Hamilton Seymour , was at a party gathered at the palace of the Archduchess Helen , when the Emperor Nicholas approached him and drew him into a conversation. This was chiefly with reference to Eastern affairs , and in the course of it he made the following remark as to Turkey and its position : "We have on our hands a sick man a very sick man. It will be , I tell you Vankly , a great misfortune if one of these days he should slip away from us , especially before all necessary arrange ments are made. " On the following 20th of February he expressed himself again to our embassador in the s'ame strain : "I repeat to you that the sick man is dying , and we can never allow such an event to take us by surprise. London Exchange. A conuESPONDENT tells how the French Canadians look at small pox. He stopped over night with a man whose son was foolish. The native .said he was made so by small pox. Said he : "You see , we have all got to have small pox sooner or later , and so last fall , having our work done up early , 1 said to my wife : 'I guess this is a good time to have it. ' So I hitched up , went down to the village and got it. It killed three of my children and made that boy foolish. " The most of the members of the late dominant faction of the democratic con vention feel like the boy that had the small pox. Topics. DEAD men tell no talcs , but dead booms speak an eloquent stoiy. Tin : reason why Chamberlain's Cough Remedy is a favorite with so many people is because it can always be depended upon. It's prompt and effectual cures of couglis , colds , croup and whooping cough , have made it standard and those , who have used it prefer it to any other. Sold by X. A. Spaldiug and A. J. Willey.
