THE Ludell Settler has changed
. -Hands. George retiring and Davis and
Moore'assuming charge. They can't d
better than follow their illustrious pred
ecessor so far as the typographica
is concerned , at all events.
-TnE great soul of the people of Pur
nas'tioiuily is terribty agitated over the
"county money wrangle. " The average
amount of county money in the treasur
is given at about $20,000 hence th
eagerness to be the county depository.
TIIE Hastings Democrat reports an
other scandal on the hook. The atmos
phere must needs be intensely frigid
when llichard , ( who seems to enjoy
routing around in such matters as thor
oughly as the average porker in the
quag-mire. ) can't resurrect a case of
scandal.
AN effort is making , with fair pros
pects of success , to procure the pardon
of the Younger brothers , now serving
life-sentences in the Stillwater peniten
tiary for participating in the Northfield
murder and bank robbery of several
years ago. The nest movement that
would meet with popular approval , ( were
it placed on foot , ) is one having for its
object the hanging of a few of the ras
cals engaged in this jail delivery business.
THE dispatch from Kio de Janeiro
stating that the Senate and Chamber of
Deputies have passed a bill for the grad
ual abolition of slavery in Brazil may
furnish cauie for rejoicing and regret
among our own people. "With an esti
mated pipulatiou of 12,000,000 of
whom 1,233,195 were held in slavery in
September of last year , it will be seen
that the proportion of slave to free in
habitants in Brazil in 1884 was larger
thanthat of slave to free people in this
country iu 1SUO , aud yet Brazil has un
dertaken to conquer this trouble by law ,
like Christian men , without murdurinir
a half a million meu , as was dor.e in
our civil warA law for gradual eman
cipation was passed in 1871 , which pro
vided that children thenceforth born of
slave women should be "considered of
free condition. " The present bill pro
vides that all slaves of more than sixty
years of age shall be at once declared
free. Those remaining shall be divided
into classes , according to age and value.
In seventeen years they shall all be free.
So within twenty-five years from the
dawn of the reform begun by Dora Pe
dro's Parliament the question of slavery
in Brazil will be solved and the last in
dependent portion of the American con
tinent where slavery xva allowed will be
'free , and without the shedding of blood.
THE new franchise measure in Great
Britian is far more sweeping than was
commonly supposed in this country.
Nearly or quite two million voters have
been added to the list and who are now
exercising the ballot privilege for the
first time. It is impossible to tell what
this vast mass of men believe or want
in politics. They outnumber the total
vote of the country under the previous
status by three to one. Immense chan
es in .the policy of Great Britain ar
not unlikely to be accomplished by thi
new departure. One bignificant fact i
that the tories are negotiating with Par
nell and the home rulerswhile the rad
icals are insisting upon the integrity of
the union. It may be , therefore , as
sumed to be the radical opinion that na
tional pride predominates among the
lower classes.
THE Holdrege Nugget thus "shroud ? "
Jumbo :
Jumbo is dead. He tackled a train at St.
Thomas , Out. , the other day , and lost the
game. He warst jumbled Jumbo"that ever
.struck Canada , county , and is about forty
years old. He has been quite prominent in
politics for the past ten years , urn ing which
time lie has served three terms in the state
senate.
By the bye , have you noticed How
our Grover is doing the civil service act
up , these days ? Official heads are be
ing decapitated at an alarming rate.just
the same as though "public offices' '
were not "public trusts , " you know.
The epidemic has at last struck Nebras
ka with sufficient virulence to satisfy
the most exacting bourbon.
A WOMAN at Herkimer , N. Y. , killed
her husband , chopped him up fine and
burned the pieces in the stove. As show
ing the ability of the sex to hoe its own
row in the busy and bustling world , the
incident only loses force when we learn
that she was detected because she could
not keep the secret. Journal.
THE Cleveland idea seems to be about
like .this , it is all 0. K. to be an offens
ive partisan , provided you are a demo
cratic partisan. Q he violation of the
civil service reform law is in being a
republican. Great head that.
POLITICS in the Niobrara. region must
be animated. The republicans are re
ported as holding two conventions and
the democratic factious as voting In
dians at the primaries.
THE fate of Jumbo is held up as a
warning to President Cleveland. While
he is trying to save his civil service
baby , the Democratic train is thunder
ing down upon him.
GASTBEUG will have a regular walk
away. No opposition being placed in
the field by the democracy , they choos
ing the rather to ratify the republican
nominee.
AYE acknowledge the receipt of coni"
plimentaries to the Hitchcock county
fair , to be held October 1st , 2d and 3d ,
