THE exploration of the Yukon , the
great river of Alaska , reveals that a very
fine stream has been wasted by putting
it in a country where it is of little use
except for drainage purposes. But in
these days there are people who believe
that is about all rivers .are fit for any
way , unless it might be the basis upon
which to distribute large sums of gov
ernment funds for improvements that
seldom improve.
THE President has received an ele
gant framed photograph of Prince Bis
marck. It was a present from Prince
Bismarck himself and bore his personal
autograph. It will be hung in the Pres
ident's chamber. It represents the
Prince in his military uniform. It is
probable that the President will return
the'compliment and send back one of
his photographs similarly framed.
MONTREAL is suffering with the small
pox and a mob at the same time. Ac
cording to our telegraphic dispatches re
ceived from that plague stricken city
the inhabitants are wild with uncontrol-
able excitement. They have made a
perfect wreck of the health office , and
as though the druggists had formed a
league of destruction , they have smash
ed their windows and made havoc with
their wares.
THE Panama canalisadvertised to
open a section to the water from the
Caribbean sea , as an experiment on the
one hand and as an advertisement on the
other. Theamount estimated for its
total cost , so it is claimed by the ene
mies of the schemCjhas almost been ex
pended in the construction of the cheap
est and easiest quarter of its length.
The managers are going forward , how
ever , with apparent confidence of final
success.
PEOPLE in Texas have apparently
3een getting a great deal of credit for
aeing bold and bad to which they were
not entitled. Yesterday six stalwart
Texans , armed cap-a-pie , sat in the Ab-
lene stage with chattering teeth , quak-
ng knees and hands uplifted as if in
supplication to heaven while a youth of
if teen summers calmly relieved them of
their valuables and rifled the mail sacks.

saloon keeper's best friend , as it will

the spring will work that sets out the
