Hon. S. L. Green , President of the Repub

DEAR SIR : Having learned that I have
been placed in nomination for County Super

tion over which you had the honor to preside ,
permit me to express my thanksthrough you ,
to the members of the Convention , for the dis
tinguished consideration conferred upon me ,
which , coming unsought , is the more to be
prized. It is not without a distrust of my abil
ity to do the fullest justice to the responsible
office that I accept the nomination , adding
only , that if elected , it will be my highest am
c ; bition to take up the work where my worthy
predecessor may leave it and to carry forward
the cause of popular education in accordance
with the progressive spirit of the age. Trust-
iug , though a woman , that your confidence
has not been misled , I am ,

THIS is the season of prairie fires.
With all that may be said by the press
in regard to the burning prairie , there is
a vast amount of recklessness exhibited
by people who are exposedto this
danger.
WE see it stated in the State Journal
that Zimmerman , ( the murderer of Jack
Woods ) , who has been under sentence
of death for that crime , has been admit
ted to bail in the sum of § 5,000 and
flown the country. If the report is true ,
the case is without precedent.
F. BERT , of the Reveille , expresses
deep solicitation for our tenure of life
under certain and specific"exegencies.
However that may be , if the fool-killer
ever strikes Culbertson , "may the Lord
have mercy on your soul , " Bert. There
"will be a dull thud and all will be over.
THE passage of an. ordinance for
compulsory vaccination in Montreal has
resulted in a serious riot. The mob
showered stones on the officers of the
municipality and had to be dispersed at
the point of the bayonet : The rioters
were in many cases armed , and the spirit
evinced indicated that the crowd was of
the opinion that ' 'freedom shrieked"
when anti-vaccination fell.
FITZHUGH LEE is in the saddle once
more. It is the same saddle in which
his famous uncle , Robert E. Lee , rode
during the Virginia campaign against
the Union. Fitzhugh Lee is making
his canvass as candidate for governor of
Virginia accompanied by a troop of con
federates from his old cavalry regiment
This is very suggestive. With Fitzhugh
Lee the war is not over yet. Bee.
SINCE the springing of the Bulgarian
mine we hear no more of the sorrows of
Alfonso and the rape of the Carolin %
islands. The neighbors have other fish
to fry and have forgotten all about the
grievances of Spain and th'e insolence
of Bismarck toward that cholera strick
en people. We easily forget the grief of
our acquaintances when we have some
of our own to attend to. Journal.
PHAIRIE fires have swept over , a vast
extent of territory in Dakotadestroying
many fann houses and the 'season's"
crops. In the grazing regions the grass
is destroyed and cattle will suffer. It is
- stated that the course of the fires could
te-- he discerned all along 125 miles of rail
road , aud in some cases the fire is known
to have extended 20 miles from the
track. The scene is described as being
of utter blackness as far as the eye
could reach. The loss by these fires
will probably run up into the millions.
IT is alleged that about forty repub
lican citizens of South Dakota met
secretly the other day and nominated
an entire state ticket , including two
congressmen and two United States
senators , and pledged themselves to do
their utmost to pull them through. The
forty are very previous , if the allega
tion be true. Dakota isn't a state yet ,
r- and the prospects arc that she will not
be for the next-two years , at least The
democratic party will never admit her so
long as it has a majority to prevent it in
either house , or a president to veto a hill j
for her admission. Journal.
In company with Dr. Kay , our re
porter enjoyed a ride of a few miles ,
north of town , last Friday afternoon.
Our paragrapher found the roads , espec
ially on the hill-sides and in the canyons
in a wretched , aye almost dangerous
condition. He also ascertained that the
road overseer had made no attempt
whatever to collect the poll taxes of
that district , which" consequently went
into the county treasurer as delinquent.
Further that those living along the road
have all been anxious and willing to
assist with labor and money in repairing
the roads , but that no organized effort
has as yet been instituted by the over
seer , and nothing is done. Some wor"
should be done this fall before the col
weather sets in. and we feel safe
promising the support of those living
along that highway. Our scribe feels
repaid for his shaking _ up by his raid on
John Modrell's melon patch , where he
found big , little and indifferent melons
in profusion , and to which he helped
himself bountifully.
