A PROVERB says : "An untried friend
is like an uncracked nut. " An uncrack-
ed nut is worth more than a cracked nut.
Ergo , never try your friends.
THE revivalist , Sam Jonesis , slangy ,
chews tobacco , loves girls and.is fond of
fast horses. This would go to show that
revivalists are pretty nearly human ,
after all.
A NEBRASKA man claims to have dis
covered , by means of a microscope , the
existence of a human soul. That is
about the only way most souls could be
discovered.
: < AN English electrician asserts there
is no case on record of a person having
been killed by lightning while asleep in
bed. " This is valuable. Whenever you
hear it thunder , go to bed and fall
asleep immediately. . This beats light
ning ruds for simplicity.
A GEORGIA man has seen a spider as
large as a hickory-nut , with a face like
a man of the Malay type , all the feat
ures being imitated with startling pre
cision. We do not Avish to be meddle
some , but we feel called upon to advise
the Georgia man to beware. Between
this sort of spider and delirium tremens
there is only a stepso we have been told.
IN the lapse of a few days the iron
horse will be in Oberlin.
MONDAY of last week , two cars of the
boarding train on the Eepublican City
branch were destroyed by fire , near
Norton.
"HE died willingly in.the . hope of
salvation. " You may think this refers
to a clergyman who has served God for
a half century , but it does not. It re
fers to a New York State murderer who
chopped up his wife. Detroit Free
Press.

THE tragic death of that mountain of
flesh Jumbo is reported as occasion
ing more newspaper and popular com
ment in England than the Puritan-Gen-
esta yacht race. Verily , the locomo-
motive has no more worlds to conquer.
TflE Lincoln Daily Democrat recently
came uricler the business management of
A. B. Coffroth , who reinforces that pa
per with a ripe experience , business and
journalistic , which will largely aid in
building up that organ.
: ( WHAT you want , " said the barberas ,
he run his fingers through the few re
maining hairs on the head of a custo
mer "what you want is a bottle of my
hair restorer. " "What I want , " re
turned the customer , "is a divorce. "
And the barber said no more. Boston
Courier.
KING LUDWIG of Bavaria , who has
been excused a great deal of costly non
sense during his royal career on the
ground of partial insanity , has varied the
monotony of his eccentricities by beat
ing a dentist who pulled a tooth for him ,
because it hurt his royal nibs. The Ba
varians have a remedy at hand. Let
them hire John L. Sullivan to come
over and personate the dentist the next
time Ludwig has the toothache. Prof.
Sullivan can yank out a tooth without
hurting much , if anybody can.
A FEAV days ago a well-known socie
ty young man shocked one of his ladr
friends by his ignorance of history. It
was after a dinner party at his house ,
and she was telling him what she had
learned in her private history class.
One thing led to another , and all the
time he was getting into deeper water.
At last she surprised him by inquiring :
"Now tell me Mr. what are the
Knights of Bath ? " He stammered for
a while , and finally blurted out : "Why ,
Saturday nights , I guess. " Buffalo
Courier.
THE suspicion is rapidly gaining
ground that the trial of Ferdinand Ward
the thief who stole General Grant's hard
earned savings and the wretch who struck
him a death blow in dragging his name
for a time into disgrace by claiming him
as an accessory to his frauds , is going
to be white-washed in some way in the
New York courts , and permitted to get
away with the swag that he has so far
concealed from his creditors. If this
suspician is well founded nobody will
feel very enthusiastic about erecting a
monument to General Grant in New
York. Journal.
Tim reason why Chamberlain's Cough
Remedy is a favorite with so many people is
because it can always be depended upon. It's
prompt and effectual cures of coughs , colds
croup and whooping cough , have made it
standard and those who have used it prefer
it to any other. Sold by X. A. Spalding and
