' THE death of an aged Ohioanva ; caused by the shock at discovering thai he was only 90 yeaas old , instead of be ing a centenarian as he had supposed. "I WAS never exactly buried alive , " said an old clerk , recounting his expe rierices , "but I once worked'a week ic a store that did not advertise. When ] came out my head was almost as white as you now see it. Solitary confinement did it. " Cincinnati Gazette. A GEBMAN went into a restaurant , and as he took his seat an Irish waitci came up and bowed politely , "Wie ghets ? ' ' said the German , also bowing politely. "Wheat cakes , " shouted the waiter mistaking the salutation for an order. "Nein , iiein ! " said the German. "Nine I" said the waiter. "You'll be lucky if you get three. " KING ALFONSO is in a bad box. His people demand war with Germany or his abdication , neither of which courses he feels inclined to pursue. The revolu tionists arc gaining strength hourly , and that old schemer , Isabella , is taking a lively interest in Castilian affairs. Whether war is declared or not , Alfonso's tenure ofoffice seems exceedingly limited. "SocKSFUSSENDEMBACH ! " criedBis- marck. Socks came in and looked in quiringly at the Chancellor. "Did you blace dem Garolina Hants in deize chest mit dem utter dings vot I haf cot mit Africa ! " "Schure. " "Veil , den dake 'em ouet and sent um pack. Dem Spoon- yards dey say dey vill come offer und ve * it dot koolera. " Pittsburgh Chronicle- Telegraph. MORE than five hundred thousand cases of bowel complaint have been cur ed by Chamberlain's Colic , Cholera and Diarhoea Eemedy. Only think of the pain and suffering it has relieved , the agony and distress it has prevented ; the homes it has made happy ; the lives it has saved , and you will appreciate the good work it has done. 25 cent , 50 cent and $1 bottles sold by M. A. Spalding and B. & M. Pharmacy. TEN dollars is rather a high price to pay for the fun of throwing a kiss at a woman , but that was the offense for which a Pittsburgh man had to pay such fine. The fact that the woman was married may have something to do with he severity of the sentence , but that particular Pittsburgher is not likely to ihrow kisses at any woman hereafter. A kiss that is not a fiat kiss would hard- y be more expensive. AN Irishman was advised to take shower baths. A friend explained to him how to fit up one by the use of the istern and cullender. Pat set to work and had the thing done at once. Subse quently he was met by the party who had given the advice , and on being ask- d how he enjoyed the baths , exclaimed : 'Bedad but it was foine ; I enjoyed it greatly , and kept quite dhry , too ! Being asked how he managed to take the shower , and yet remain dry , he replied , "Sure now , ye didn't thrak I was going to stand under the water without an umbrella ! " THE interesting fa6t that Mrs. T. C. Thompson of Wichita Falls , Texas , feels no inconvenience whatever from the loss of her spleen , which was removed from her body over a year ago , is giving the learned disciples of Esculapius a few pointers on what they don't know about physiology. It is also suggested by the "genial Topics man" that : - 'The Texas woman without a spleen could introduce a great reform by coming up to Nebras ka and going into Democratic politics. The great want of our bourbon friends is a leader without spleen. " Being a bour bon himself , we presume Calhoun speaks as the oracles. THE carriage containing the two ex- Presidents was just opposite the Twenty- third street entrance of the Fifth Ave nue hotel , where they were four long hours waiting for .the procession to move. General Arthur , who usually eats a light breakfast , becoming hungry , call ed to the carriage an attendant who stood in the hotel door and asked him to bring a couple of sandwiches. In a few moments the waiter appeared with a tray , on which he carried some sand wiches neatly covered with a napkin. In the center of the tray , however , was a bottle of claret , which stood bolt up right in full view of the thousands of people who thronged the sidewalks and roadways nearby. General Arthur told the waiter to take the claret back , say ing to Senator Manderson of Nebraska , who was leaning over the carriage door talking with the distinguished occupants of the vehicle : "Probably the claret is superfluous , as General Hayes has un doubtedly a flask in his pocket. " "No , " said General Hayes , with a twinkle in his eye , "since I sold my saloon in Oma ha I no longer carry a flask.
