ADDITIONAL LOCAL.
VAILTON NOTES.
We are glad to note that the sick have near
ly all recovered.
R. F. Williams has added a large tract to
his territorial domain.
Mr. McCroskie looks for his family to ar
rive about September 1st.
J. F. ilegnie and his son Andrew spent a
few days at the old Clay county home.
Mrs. Smith has sold her fine farm on the
south side , and will probably remain in the
east Mr. Baldwin was the lucky purchaser.
This is surely a busy time for the farmer.
A large amount of feed has already been put
up , and there is a fine outlook for the fall
harvest
We understand that W. L. Ferris returned
tiie first of the week , to his home at Dundee ,
111. He expressed himself as well pleased
with this land of promise.
3Ir. Simonton , son of Judge Simonton of
Superior , has been spending a few weeks in
our midst He is a son-in-law of Mr. Sprague
and may locate near Vailton.
Mr. Harris is making considerable improve
ment on his place on the north side , as indeed
are many others , were we to presume on your
space , but we simply note ( lie fact.
We are informed that Miss Seaney has re
turned to Illinois , her former home. Miss
Seaney will be greatly missed in the society ,
as she was quite a favorite with the young
people.
Quite a goodly number of Vailton people
attended the festival , Wednesday evening ,
three miles west of this place , and report a
good timebarring the disturbance at the close.
Boys , use a little discretion next time , and
don't let a difference of a few pennies lead to
such a disgraceful finale , especially where wo
men and children look to your chivalric man
hood for the protection , which the laws of
society , as well as our statute , entitle them.
Not being present we cannot give an account
in full of the literary part of the programme ,
but it was pronounced excellent in all its
parts , especially the music , which was well
rendered by the Misses Sanderson and others.

BOX ELDER BLOSSOMS.
Hark , from the tombs a doleful sound 1 In
dianola has been heard from. The facts con
dlnt
nectedwith the Box Elder festival'set rather
heavy on the young man's shoulders , they
could not icsl on his HEAD , that article is
too soft In tho first place the personal slur
that he offered did not hit the mark , as SE-
LONN lias never had the pleasureof enjoying
the inhospitality of the Indianola Sunday
School , with which he leaves us to infer they
treat a stranger , andu ; doubt very much if
the author of the article in the Courier ever
saw , MUCH LESS KNOWS-what the ninth com
sam
mandment is. 2d. He tries to creep out of the
scrape by offering a flimsy excuse , which , how
ever , will not l > ear investigation , for if he
had read the columns of THE TJUBUNE , as
every good man should , he would certainly
have seen the announcement of the festival , M
which ] fully sot loi Hi the object And again ,
he had had his eyes and ears open , he N
could have known all about it , for I am in
formed that the festival and its object were of
freely talked of on the streets of Indianola.
Sc , Mr. Local Editor , or whoever you are , you atU.
will have to try something else. Again let U.
me say to the author of the Courier article ,
read ; THE TKIBUNE carefully , it may help
yon keep the commandments. And know at

assuredly that what you stigmati&e as a se

STRIKERS must be looked upon with
out harshness when we are told that
their small wages are three months over
due. Violence is not excusableperhaps ,
but men are apt to feel in the mood for
when their pay is not forthcoming and
other men step into their places , making
strike , the only means of speedy
collection , of no avail. When a quarter
a year has elapsed since a man on
In !
wages has had any payment made him
is sure almost to be out of money ,
credit and subsistence. He has no prac InL
tical remedy but a strike. The closing L
of the business of the corporation
compels it to find at least enough money
induce its men to return to work. So
that when other men offer to take the
places ; of the strikers , continue the busi
ness of the corporation thus making
against its interest to pay back wages
it is a mighty patient man who
wouldn't feel like fighting. The striker
not always wrong , if , indeed , he is
right oftener than wrong. But in R
such cases as has been mentioned is a
Question if he can go so far as to be en
tirely wrong. In the case referred to
strikers went promptly back to work
when the railroad authorities agreed to
arbitrate. It is a question , however ,
just how much of this was due , to na F
propriety and how much to the pres
ence of a strong posse , with military
cannonJournal. .

IT is intimated that Germany wants

with Spain is a step in that direction. If

The United States will never allow its
