FRESH FISH AND CHICKENS ; THREE men in Seward county , whil working in the harvest field , were strick en to the death by the excessive heat o last Thursday. The death rate , the coun ty over , was unusually large. FROM the score of 37 to 6 , the Arap ahoe boys , who went up to Denver , las week , to amuse that team , failed signal ly. It could scarcely appear "funny" save perhaps to the spectators. THE C. B. & Q. system is probahh in better financial condition than ani road in the west. The available casl surplus in the treasury of tho corpora tion has assumed colossal proportions , $3,000,000. Aggressive , butcamiou.s they are in the van of advancement. CONCLUDING from the "food foi thought" given the Hallway Commis sion at York , the boys are having con siderably less than an excursion of pleas ure. If they make an accurate note oi the complaints at some such points , the } will have to carry an extra car of sten ographers. THE Baltimore Sun , commenting on the frequent miscarriage of justice in criminal cases , says "that out of 3,377 murders perpetrated during the year 1884 , the total number of murderers ex ecuted was but 313 , and i f this number 210 met their death by lynch law and only 103 by legal process. A YOUNG woman , prim and slender , seated herself at one of the tables re served for ladies in a Sixth Avenue oys ter saloon , and after glancing over the bill of fare , said to the waiter : "You may bring me , er a a Satanized crab , hot. " The waiter tiptoed to the cook and whispered : ' 'One deviled crab , hof as Satan. ' ' ATLANTA , GA. , has struck out on a new lead. The Union and Confederate soldiers have united to build a memorial monument in that city , upon which will rest statues of Grant and Lee , Sherman and Johnston. Upon the top a soldier in blue and a.soldier in gray will clasp hands. The corner-stone of the monu ment has been laid. It will be 180 feet high , and the estimated cost is $100,000. EITHER run a town with a vim or just sell out and leave it. One of two things must be done run the town for all it is worth , get up steam and keep it up or quit the whole thing , slide out and let nature take its course. Do you want trade ? Bid for it. Do you want busi ness to come to your town ? Encourage those who do come. Do you want a prosperous town , where people can come who are disposed to make homes ? Then bury from sight all spite work work no more for a few individuals , but all work together for common prosperity and mu tual benefit. Wake up , rub your eyes , roll up your sleeves and go to work. Don't work with fear and trembling , but take it for granted that blood will tell. Leave results to themselves , borrow no trouble , but all , unite to make it the big- est kind of a city. Ex. LIKE General Grant , the first Napo leon died of cancer. In his case the can cer was in the stomach instead of the throat. It caused him much severer pain than Grant suffered. Toward the last he could not digest his food. He was tormented by a constant thirst. His pulse beat with a feverish quickness. He improved , grew worse , and had all the hope , depression and despair that marked Grant's illness. Unlike the American soldier , he did not retain his mental faculties to the last. The cir cumstances were different. .Xapolcon ivas a vanquished man , a prisoner , de serted by his wife and surrounded only by his military family. His last words referred to his son and the army. Grant not only suffered lessbut , his last hours tvere brightened by a thousand loving tvords and tributes from wife and child ren , old army comrades , his former foes ind the most distinguished men of the tvorld.
