WHILE the little political pots fuss
and fume , sizz and sputter , Presiden
Cleveland , whose girth denotes his easy
going , independent nature , takes it coo !
and with commendable deliberation
makes such appointments as please him
without much regard being paid to those
"near the throne. " And he seems to
be disposed "to fight it out on this line
though it take him all summer.
PRESIDENT CLEVELAND has been
very conservative and cautious in th
matter of appointments and changes
during his first month in office , consid
ering what he might have done in tha
line and what his predecessors have done ,
Only 119 civil appointments of all kinds
including his cabinet officers , were sen
to the senate. More than half the for
eign missions remain unchanged a
nearly all of the Consulships. Less than
three per cent , of the postmasterships
which are recognized as Presidential ap
pointments were changed. On the whole
he has kept both in spirit and letter his
promises to the people to obey the civil
service law and encourage its wider ap
plication. While hide-bound partisans
are sorely disappointed at his failure to
make a sweeping change in the office
holders , the people who care only for
good government are well satisfied with
their new President as far as he ha
gone. Philadelphia Times.
IT looks as though the supreme court
of the state of California had jockeyed
a decision in faver of ex-Senator Sharon
in that divorce case won against him in
a lower court by Sarah Althea , nee Hill.
The court has decided that an appeal
lies against the decision of the court
below that granted Sarah for divorce-
alimony and attorneys' fees , and has
suspended the payment of any of the
money adjudged pending the appeal.
The attorney for Sharon says that this
disposes of the case , because Sarah is
eternally beaten unless she appeals , and
how can she appeal when the court be
low gaveher the judgement asked for.
This indicates that the Senator hav
ing got a suspension till the appeal is
heard , proposes to let matters rest. The
senator is in the happy condition of the
Irishman who was invited out to attend
his own hanging. "Will you hang me
before I have an opportunity to pray ? "
asked Pat. "Nov , said the sheriff ,
"you shall not be hung until you have
prayed. " "Then , be jabbers , I'll never
pray. " State Journal.
NOTWITHSTANDING the Kansas law
to the contrary , it appears from the fol
lowing article , written from Sherman
county , Kansas , to the Atwood Demo
crat , that the old trail will be used peace
ably if possible , forcibly if must be.
Just what action Kansas will take , and
just what will be the result of throwing
such hordes of Texas cattle upon these
northern ranges remains to. bo seen. If
perchance they be infected , incalcula
ble loss must necessarily result :
SnEKji.VNVir.LE. A week ajro Sunday , 1500
head of Texas cattle went through on the old
trail on their road to the north. There were
about one hundred men and u wagon load of
besides two and Win
lire-arms forty-fives a
chester which each man carried. They said if
they could not go through peaceably there was
a. way to get through and all hands were pre
pared for an emergency. A few shots were ex
changed with some of the old settlers but tho
distance was so far no one of either side re
ceived injury. There is another drive of 00-
000 head coming north and are expected to pass
through here in a few days. They are but a
short distance behind the first outfit , which
have by this passed beyond the borders cf the
state. This drive will be followed by many
more before summer is passed unless tho au
thority of the state is vindicated.

ED. TRIBUNE. The morning of the
Fourth dawned upon our village for the
first time , and will long be remembered
by all who participated therein as one of
the most enjoyable occasions of their
lives. The day was ushered in by the
firing of guns , and by music by the In
dianola bandwhich , awakened all from
their slumbers to a realization of the
fact that , "Our Nation's Grandest Hol
iday" was at hand , to be appropriately'
celebrated. The town was handsomely !
decorated with flags and banners. A
Calathumpian parade , preceded by the
band , marched through the town to the
bower to listen to addresses by the Hon.
Philip Likes and Messrs. C. W. Shurt-
leffandE. J. Harden. The Declaration of
Independence was read by Dr. Price.-
The Glee Club favored us with several
patriotic pieces , after which the crowd
returned to the town , where various
sports were indulged in. About sun
down the band played again , and it al
most made us envy our sister town hei
baud. A grand display of fire-works in
the evening. The day closed with a
grand opening ball at the Wilcox Hotel.
Credit is due to many of our citizens and
especially'to our editorW. , C. Ashwill ,
who did all in his power to make the
day enjoyable to all. Kor EDMUND.
