Official City and County Paper.
WE sec the names of General Thaypr-j
Charles H. Gere and Charles Buschow
mentioned as prospective secretaries of
the board of railroad commissioners.
OtJii democratic brethren will soon
enjoy the felicitous bourbon "pap" from
off a republican ladle. This purging
process will make it all the more ac
ceptable , however.
QUITE a number hereabouts seem to
be solicitous in regard to the tenacity of
the grip Mr. Laws has on the McCook
land office. Don't lose any sleep , gen
tlemen. OrleansfSentinel.
GRANDMA TIPTON will in due course
of events stand up to the government
rack and take his fodder , having been
appointed receiver of public moneys al
the Bloomington land office.
PRESIDENT CLEVELAND is now giv
ing every evidence of his belief in the
Jacksonian principle , "to the victoi
belongs the spoils. " Democrats , of
course , are correspondingly happy.
"INTEMPERANCE cuts down youth in
its vigor , manhood in its strength , and
age in its weakness. It breaks the fath
er's heart ; bereaves the doting mothers ,
extinguishes affections , erases congenial
love , blows out filial attachment , blasts
paternal hopeand brings down mourning
age in sorrow to the grave. Ingersoll
GENERAL BRAGQ has fallen so low in
the President's good graces that he
speaks contemptuously of Grover as
"The Tycoon. " Verily , as Solomon re
marks in the new edition , "all is vanity
and striving after wind. " It is second
wind that Bragg is striving after , now.
Grover knocked him out of his first in
the matter of a postmastership.
- THE-Button Register , in commenting
upon our remarks concerning the Long-
Johnson tragedy , inadvertently places
us in a false position. The men con
nected with that ghastly affair were dis
reputable and desperate in the extreme ,
but the woman in this particular case is
unquestionably one of those Sirens ,
whose sweet , but deceptive voice , and
whose personal charms , coupled with a
base and passionate nature , stimulated
by drink , has enticed men of otherwise
fair characters to depart from the paths
of rectitude and go down in the Charyb-
dis of sensuality. These , however , are
exceptional. Presumptions lords of
creation will have to settle the score
for nine-tenths of the grand total of all
these cases , and our rotten social laws
are largely blamable.
