J. P. Mathes , of McCook , came in on
Sunday last to see his stock horses
and cattle of each of which he has a
fine herd. Mr. Mathes is in the furni
ture business at McCook , and is having
a large trade during the boom that is
now upon us The boss town of the
xtreme northwest is Bird City , in Chey
enne county. D. W. Cave , 11. M. Pen-
darvis and A. L. Burr , of Alma , Neb. ,
the Northwest Cattle Co. , represented
B. Bird , Max Rich , of Lincoln , Neb. ,
nnd W. H. Dimmick , of Ludell , all men
of business and success have the enter
prise in hand and they invite settlers
md business men who want to succeed
to come to their town. Cheyenne is second
end to no county in Kansas , has more
water , better land , and more resources
than all the counties south of it to the
Indian Territory. The town company
lias been organized by the election of
Benj. Bird , as President ; Secretary , A.
L. Burr ; Treasurer , Max Rich. The
company will hold their first meeting at
McCook , Neb. , Saturday , May 16th.
If you want a good place to go start at
once for Bird City.
I WISH some strong , bright angel stood
before you just now , as you read , girls ,
to flash before you , as no words of mine
can , the power you possess to help or to
iiinder the cause of temperance , to make
you feel your responsibility , because
you arc girls , in the matter ; to shudder
at its weight , and to never cease trying
; o fulfill it ! Doubtless you have heard
i great deal about the value of your
smiles : but do you know the value of
your frowns ? I wish I could make you
feel the value of your frowns , and the
importance of knowing just what to
frown upon. What a man must do by
a blow a woman can do by a frown.
When the time comes that the young
man who now shares his time in your
society and the saloon , who jokes about
temperance in your presence , and takes
a glass socially now and then , is made
to feel that these things cannot be if
you are to be his companion , at party ,
ride or church ; that good society cannot
tolerate these things in its members ;
in short , that this kind of man is un
fashionable and unpopular then alco
hol will tremble on its throne , and the
liquor traffic will hide its cancerous face.
Miss Cleveland.
THE Rev. J. M. Farnham , the pastor
of a colored church at Charlotte , N. C. ,
has ordered a pair of shoes from a Lynn ,
Mass. , dealer , twenty inches long by
seven and a half wide. As the much
footed clergyman is six feet ten inches
high and weighs 420 pounds , he will
be the terror of the North Carolina mule
when he gets his new shoes on.
