OUR EXPOSITION LETTER.
The grounds about the buildings
are now dotted in living green , a foot
high , or more , white clover and the
deep green , moss-like Bermuda grass ,
the of beautiful
forming ground-work a
ful picture , while patches of radiant
flowers of a thousand different hues
and odors , fill the air with their de
lightful perfumes , the live oaks and
other trees adding their grateful beau
ties to the scene. The many little
parks , scattered like oases over the
city , serve as breathing places for the
populace and are covered on the warm
afternoons with children , and visitors ,
who romp or lounge over the grassy
sward. The present is really the best
time for people to visit the city , the
Exposition not only being complete
but all nature adding her numerous
charms to delight the eye of the
stranger.
The awards recently made in the
department of citrous fruits , have oc
casioned more popular comment than
any hitherto made. The chief com
petition was between California and
Florida , whose displays have been
a source of constant interest and pleas
ure to all lovers of semi-tropic fruits.
The first named state carried off a
number of premiums on oranges , in
cluding two gold and several silver
medals , one for best collection of not
less than twenty varieties , while Flor
ida took the special sweepstake pre
mium , a gold medal and $250 for best
general display from any state ; Mexico
ice was awarded a gold medal and
$100 for best collection , not less than
twenty varieties from any foreign
country , and the state of Sonora , a
silver medal and 650 for ten varieties ,
Mississippi and Louisiana also re
ceived some minor awards , and gen
eral satisfaction seems to have been
secured , although there has been a
little sparring between the two citrous
fruit growing states. The tables in
Horticultural Hall covered with these
golden fruits , with thousands of
blooming pot plants on every side ,
make a most interesting and fascinat
ing scene , especially so to Northern
people , and one that will no doubt
lure many to the climates where such
scenes are native to the manor born.
The railroads entering here , have
kept up a constant rivalry as to which
should have the honor of carrying the
greatest number of passengers to the
Exposition , and so far the great Lou
isville & Nashville railway is concecl-
d the palm , tens of thousands having
come in over that popular line , and
its General Passenger Agent Mr.
is correspondingly happy. This line
brings visitors either via St. Louis or
Cincinnati , through Louisville , Nash
ville and Mobile , and over the most
interesting and novel territory of the
southern country , and through indus
trial sections just now attracting the
greatest attention from investors and
settlers. It makes a very fine exhibit
in the Government building , of the
ores and crops , timbers and other re
sources for which its line and branches
are famous.
The great convention of the West
ern Waterways improvement associa
tion , was held here in Music Hall ,
April 7th and 8th , and was attended
by about a thousand delegates , repre
senting boards of trade , produce ex
changes , agricultural organizations ,
etc. , of the twenty-one states and ter
ritories interested in the improvement
of the Mississippi River and its nu
merous tributaries. Gov. Lo\vry pre
sided , Mr. Dore , of Illinois , being
temporary chairman , and making an
eloquent appeal in behalf of the Hen-
nepin Canal. Congressman Murphy ,
of Iowa , was also present and took an
active part in the proceedings , which
included an able address by Judge
Blake , of South Bend , Indiana , mem
ber of the River Commission. All the
speeches and resolutions were marked
with a determination to have justice
done to our water ways ; the members
of the convention made a trip to the
Jetties.
WISCONSIN .
Was admitted into the Union in
1S43 and has to-day a population only
a little short of 1,500,000. Her agri
cultural , milling and manufacturing
industries have increased very rapidly.
She is very proud of her gieat me
tropolis , Milwaukee- with a population
approaching 200,000 , the home of her
energetic and business-like commis
sioner , Hon. E. D. Hoi ton who has
done so much to make his state's dis
play at the World's Fair a represent
ative one , and has given liberally of
his valuable time and private resour
ces , as shown by the specimens of tim
ber both soft and hard wood. Wis
consin is the lumberman's paradise , 1
and many fortunes have been made
out of her almost inexaustable forests.
She exports largely to Europe , and
