Asmoke-burning locomotive , which
has been tested on the Chicago and
Northwestern and Chicago and fiock
Island Railroads , has proved very 'suc
cessful. Though the poorest quality
of bituminous coal \vis used , there was
an abscence both of black smoke and
cinders. As the gases are all burnt
in this locomotive , there is a cblfslcl-
erable saving of fuel. The smoke
stack , which is straight , is at the rear
of the engine , and to reach it the smoke
traverses foity feet instead of twelve ,
the usual distance , passing throuo-h an

upper and lower set of flues. The
heavy cinders and dust fall into a
smoke arch in front , and another arch
in the rear catches the lighter parti
cles of dust .and ashes. Thus nc cin
ders , sparks or fire is .thrown out , and
the light white smoke causes no an
noyance.
