The magnificent entertainment by Ella June Mcade would be hard in de scribe in words. She stands at the head of her profession , no words of praise or criticism can add t : > or detract from her well earned icputation. Hannibal ( Ho. ) Daily Courier. A great many cifttte , .we are inform ed , have drifted into the Driftwood re gion , and considerable loss has already been experienced. There areabout400 head of drift cattle in the immediate vi cinity of Ludell , Rawlins county , most ly of the Cucle ranch. Look before you leap. Consider well , my friend , before you give your influ ence , your moans , or even countenance , to corrupt schemes and schemers would- be public benefactors. True men and tried , never extol their own merits , or peddle their own wares. A number of Rawlins county , Kansas , men were in town , last Thursday even ing , taking depositions before Justice Colvin , in the case of parties charged with taking cattle from the trail , two years ago. The same cattle were1 sold to Mr. Farley , this winter. Nine wagon loads of lumber started from here for Hayes Centre , yesterday. The material will be used in building a land office for Mr. Wilson and a store building two stories high for a gentle man by the name of Hicks , who is now confined to his bed by illness in our town. Some bibulous individual fell through a pane of glass in the postoffice door , Monday night , which moves Postmaster Scott tn inquire : ' -What reason is there in chipping in a dollar or two to build a lock-up , and then have drunken men foti ] around the street and fall through the windows " F. L. McCiacken lias , just recently set up two clocks of design unique. Oiie of them is considerably over one hundred years old , and is undoubtedly anold timer. " The other was pat ented something over a year -igo , and works on the principle of the four- hun dred day-cloi-k. in a circular movement Teach theyoung to dojioit themselves in their every relation in the family circle , in public , in their social inter course , etc. , so that when they have at tained man's.estate or womanhood , the } may not look back with regret or shame over a course doted with moments of theiryouthf ul indiscretions. Junius Jr Herodotus , that wise old Greek , once remarked that "there can be no virtue where there is no truth , and as for false hood and double-dealing , none but fools and knaves condescend to adopt them. " It is a pity he could not have lived at the present time for he is sadly needed in tiiis day of common liars and easy integrity. The entertainment to be given by Eila June Meade in the Opera Hall , next Thursday evening , February 5th , promises to be an interesting and en joyable one , and will doubtless call out a large audience. Remember , in addi- t'on , that the net proceeds go toward purchasing apparatus for our schools , in which our citizens take just pride. We have just received a car load of that Grand Island Flour that has been such a great favorite with the people of McCook , and we are selling it at a sweeping reduction of 50 cents per' hundred on all grades. We have also reduced the price on bread , : ind we now give four loaves f6r 25 cents. Pies , 10 cents a piece. PROBST BROS. During the recent severe weather no persons could be incarcerated in our cooler on account of the lack of a stove , and many drunk and disorderlies have gone scot free , who ought to havu had 48 hours of quietude ami solitude with in its confines. Can't we raise a sub scription and procure a stove , and make an end of a few of these drunken nui sances. The P. & M. railroad will build a branch from Republican City to Norton , Kansas , in the , spring. How much farther the road will be extended is not nppnrcnt , but the indications are that Oberlin may hear the welcome locomo tive whistle also. The Congregational people gave a pleasant supper at the church , on Wed nesday evening , that was enjoyed by a goodly number of members and friends from town and country. After the sup per the matter of pew. rentals was at tended to. Mr. Moody at the Chicago Lumber Yard can accommodate all who desire sittings in the church. Our diminutive disciple of Blackstone , of the surname savoring of the ermine judicial , and a pugnacious pilgrim from bleeding Kansas , satrapy of Rawlins , in dulged in a little set-to , Thursday even ing , after the similitude of the late Ry- ' ail-Sullivan soft glove entertainment , in which the Trojan from Kansas insinua ted his ponderous digits into the physi ognomy of his more cultured and less cumbersome opponent , in the region of the left optic , producing an allusion anything but matrimonial , while the Kansan's manly brow closely resembled a section of Egjptian hieroglyphics after the "uierrie war was over. " There are none to question the crys tallized wisdom of the warning , "Don't monkey with the buzz-saw , " because it has never been considered necessary to put one's hand ou that dangerous arti cle of machinery to ascertain definitely as to whether it moved or not. But no matter how well established is the wis dom of tha above , ever and anon some one defies its warning voice and comes to grief. Mike of the Oyster Bay , while under the influence of some of McCook's bourbon best , entered a well-known West Railroad street resort , Friday last , whence he emerged some time there after , carried away on a chip. It. ap pears that the madam of the house while testing the relative hardness of Mike's cranium with a club produced some'very deleterious effects on his Celtic consti tution. The sorrowful disclosures of the past week or two must appeal to every man ly and womanly heart in this burg for action wherein heretofore has been con jecture and supine inactivity. It is not necessary to enter into a discussion of events or persons figuring in the trans action , or further to discuss as to wheth er or not -'man is his brother's keeper , ' * or how far communities are responsible for the acts of the individuals compos ing the community. We will waive all these for the present as not pertinent. But the resultssad , as they are , remain. The husband who might be in the en joyment of the confidence and regard of his fellow-men , and who , with the co operation \\illiugly given him by many who felt intire > ted in his success , might now have a lucrative and complimentary business , well , \ve will allow the reader to draw on his imagination for further conclusions. But , there are still more serious considerations. A heart-broken mother and two helpless little ones a home made desolate. These things , and we refrain from specific mention , appeal with an intense earnestness to all the higher sensibilities of American manhood. This is one among the many anomalies in our social economy , where in the blow falls with the most relent less and crushing force upon the inno cent and helpless those less able to stand the bufferings of a mercenary age. Shall these things continue and prevail ? Shall no hand , no voice be raised in defense of our homes and all the hallowed and heaven-sent associa tions that surround them ? Will not the events still commonly , aye , too com monly discussed in our town , awake u from our lethargyand stimulate an ag gressive movement against the many forms of vice recognized as existing in our midst ? Wanted. . To buy for cas > h , 6 to 10 good fresh- milch cows , 4 to 7 years old , with their calves. Also , 200 to 300 bushels good corn on ear or shelled. Apply to or ad dress W 0. Dear llltlo Willie , serenely sweet , Thou art resting near the mercy-scat , * And while we drop the scalding tear , His spirit may be hovering near. near.FRIEND. . SENATOR M ANDERSON writes llcceiv- er Babcoek that the bill repealing the timber-culture , pre-emption and desert land laws has passed the House , and , that the bill coming up in the Senate was referred to a committee , who return the bill to the Senate with ten amendments - 1 ments to the original bill. This puts ' the matter in such a shape that the pos sibilities of the bill becoming a law at this session are rather limited. So those who arc exercised about these two rights thiit have been in peril of being repeal ed , can feel reasonably safe so far as this session of congress is concerned. Emigrants are pouring into California at the rate of 1200 to 1800 a week , says the San Francisco Chronicle. Most of them settle in the southern part of the state and engage in fruit and wine growing. Many of the emigrants are men of means , who go to the country in search of health and are led to devote themselves to congenial business. The poorer classes go to the northern coun ties and engage in agricultural pursuits , while about 30 per cent , of the whole number push up north to Oregon and Washington Territory , The population of California i now about 1,000,000. JUDGE McCuu.ouou , of the Doug las county court , has rendered a decis ion to the effect that wholesale liquor dealers must take out the stune sort of license under the panic condition under our state law that retailers do.
